Air India Delhi-Mumbai flight gets engine fire warning, pilot issues Mayday call

Over 150 passengers on board Air India’s flight AI 814 from Delhi to Mumbai experienced a tense situation early Wednesday (Dec 20, 2023) when the crew declared an emergency and put out a “Mayday” call during the approach to Mumbai. This was triggered by an engine fire warning being sounded by the systems on board the A320 aircraft.

Confirming that an “emergency” was declared but the flight landed uneventfully, Air India in a statement said that upon inspection, “no signs of fire or smoke were detected.”
“At the time of landing, a fire warning went out, forcing the crew to declare ‘Mayday’. Following protocol, the pilot released the two fire extinguishers as a precaution. The incident is being probed by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA),” a source told CNBC-TV18.

The source added that since the incident-hit aircraft was stuck on the Mumbai airport runway till checks were complete, the runway remained out of bounds for operations for around 20 minutes.

As a result, an incoming Air India flight AI 605 was diverted to Ahmedabad, the source added.

“AI 814 operating Delhi to Mumbai on 19 December 2023 experienced a fire warning indication on one of its engines. As a precaution, an emergency was declared and air traffic control was informed. The flight landed uneventfully and, upon inspection, no signs of fire or smoke were detected,” an Air India spokesperson said in the statement.

A senior official at the DGCA told CNBC-TV18 that the incident is being investigated to ascertain the cause of the fire warning.
