Al Ahly star-studded squad for Club World Cup quest

Egyptian giants Al Ahly named a 23-man squad for this month’s Fifa Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia, led by recent signing Anthony Modeste.

The Cairo-based club left out injured duo Mohamed Abdelmonem and Reda Selim but can still call on an array of talent for their campaign.

Chief among them is Modeste, the French striker who joined Al Ahly in August after a six-month spell with German club Borussia Dortmund.

Also included is South African winger Percy Tau, formerly of Premier League Brighton, who will pose a considerable threat from wide areas.

Veteran goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy will marshal the defence as Al Ahly bid to improve on their third-placed finish at the last Club World Cup in February.

Al Ahly kick off their tournament against Saudi champions Al Ittihad on Friday.

The Egyptian giants are appearing at a record-extending 10th Club World Cup as they look to improve on their previous third place finishes in the competition.

With attacking weapons like Modeste and Tau in their armoury, Al Ahly have the firepower to concern any opponent in Saudi Arabia.
