Google is set to discontinue its photo roundup service, Album Archive, by July 2023. However, users will have alternative options to back up their content.
Album Archive was a convenient platform that allowed users to access images from various Google services on any device. Users are now receiving notifications about the impending shutdown, along with a suggestion to use Google Takeout to save their existing photos.
When visiting the Album Archive website, users will see a message announcing the closure: “Album Archive will no longer be available. Photos and videos you see here will no longer be accessible after July 19th, 2023. You can use Takeout to download these items before then.”
A ‘learn more’ button directs users to this page for further information on the change and alternative options.
Despite these notifications, some Google users seem unaware of Album Archive and Google Takeout (see tweet below).

The Album Archive home page displays a gallery view of images and videos sent by the user through other Google services. If there are specific Google Hangout images users wish to save, Takeout provides a convenient download link via email or the option to transfer them to cloud services like Google Drive.
It’s worth noting that the emailed links provided by Google Takeout are typically valid for only seven days. Moreover, Workspace users will need their admin’s permission to download content through Takeout.
A support page related to the shutdown mentions that content can be viewed and managed on services like Blogger, Google Photos, and Chat until July 19th.
Users have until July 19th, 2023, to download their Album Archive data using Takeout.
