Amazon’s new AI review summarizer could help you empty your pockets even faster

Have you ever found yourself too lazy to read user reviews when shopping on Amazon? Well, you’re in luck! Amazon has recently introduced a generative AI tool to its platform that can summarize reviews. This tool will provide short paragraphs on the product detail page, highlighting key features and overall customer sentiment. Instead of going through numerous reviews, customers can quickly scan a concise block of text to determine whether a product is good or not. Amazon also mentions that users can direct the AI to focus on specific attributes of the product, such as “ease of use” or performance while streaming content.

Unfortunately, we were unable to test this AI feature as we were not included in the rollout. However, The Verge claims to have accessed the tool on product listings for TVs, headphones, tablets, and fitness trackers. The tool’s availability is not consistent, as it appears on the Galaxy Tab A7 but not on the Galaxy Tab A8. Additionally, The Verge states that Amazon’s AI tends to favor writing positive content, spending less time on the negatives.

We reached out to Amazon with several questions about the tool, including whether there will be a desktop version and if the company plans on providing links to the AI’s source reviews, as Google’s SGE tool does. It would be helpful to have sources mentioned in the summarized paragraphs. However, Amazon has not provided any further information at this time.

Analysis: Remaining skeptical

Amazon has been exploring AI for some time now. In May, the company posted a job listing for a “machine learning focus engineer,” indicating its interest in developing an interactive conversational experience for its search engine. The Amazon search bar could potentially offer a ChatGPT-like experience in the future, where users can interact with the AI while searching for products.

However, it’s important to approach AI-generated content with skepticism. Generative AIs are known to “hallucinate” and occasionally provide inaccurate information. Some experts believe that this issue may never be fully resolved. Therefore, it’s crucial to read the summarizer’s text with caution. Traditional human opinions, like the ones provided by TechRadar, continue to hold value.

Labor Day is approaching, which means there will be savings. Don’t forget to check out TechRadar’s guide for Amazon’s Labor Day Sale in 2023. Price cuts for certain electronics are already available.
