Anurag Thakur emphasizes the need for sensitivity to India’s cultural diversity from OTT platforms

In his meeting with representatives of OTT players, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur emphasized the importance of ensuring that their platforms do not promote vulgarity and abuse disguised as ‘creative expression’.

Thakur stated, “OTT players have a responsibility to prevent the spread of vulgarity and abuse on their platforms by presenting it as ‘creative expression’.”

During the meeting in New Delhi, Thakur also urged the platforms to be mindful of India’s culture and avoid content that undermines it in the name of creative freedom.

“India is a diverse country; OTTs must reflect the collective conscience of the nation and provide a wholesome viewing experience for people of all age groups. Platforms should also respect our cultural diversity as we unleash India’s creative economy,” Thakur emphasized.

The minister also raised concerns about the misuse of OTT platforms for propagating vicious propaganda and ideological biases, as reported by PTI based on accounts from attendees at the meeting.

Thakur stated that various topics were discussed during the meeting, including content regulation, user experience, improving accessibility for the specially abled, and overall growth and innovation of the OTT sector. “The Ministry of I&B looks forward to fostering partnerships and collaborations to achieve these objectives,” he added.

Earlier today, Thakur also announced the Best Web Series Award at the International Film Festival of India in Goa. The award aims to recognize outstanding original work on an OTT platform in an Indian language and encourage investment opportunities in India’s OTT sector. Thakur expressed his intention to promote content in Indian languages, acknowledge exceptional talent, and foster growth and innovation in the OTT industry.

Following discussions with Union Minister Anurag Thakur, representatives from various OTT platforms were seen posing with the award brochure unveiled today.
