Apple is bringing generative AI to iPhone and Mac in 2024, says CEO Tim Cook

As the tech industry is sailing through the revolution of AI, Apple fans have been a bit disappointed with the company’s delay in launching anything related to artificial intelligence. Apple’s rivals, on the other hand, including Samsung and Google, have already introduced a bunch of new AI features with their own language models. But the wait from Apple will soon be over, as Apple is gearing up to introduce generative AI to iPhone, Mac, and other devices by the end of 2024.

During the quarterly earnings call on Thursday afternoon, Apple CEO Tim Cook mentioned that the generative AI software features are in the works at Apple and will make their way to customers “later this year.” “As we look ahead, we will continue to invest in these and other technologies that will shape the future. That includes artificial intelligence, where we continue to spend a tremendous amount of time and effort, and we’re excited to share the details of our ongoing work in that space later this year,” Cook said in his remark, (as reported by The Verge).

However, Cook didn’t reveal more about the company’s AI plans. He just confirmed that the company is surely planning something for its users and they are excited to launch it soon. “Our M.O., if you will, has always been to to do work and then talk about work, and not to get out in front of ourselves. And so we’re going to hold that to this as well. But we have got some things that we’re incredibly excited about, that we’ll be talking about later this year,” Cool added. “Let me just say that I think there’s a huge opportunity for Apple with generative AI and with AI, without getting into many more details or getting out ahead of myself.”

Interestingly, Cook mentioned generative AI several times in his remarks, but he never confirmed any specifics and only said that the company is planning for a big release this fall. His hint towards new AI features also aligns with the latest reports that suggest that the upcoming iOS 18 update will be the “biggest” software update in Apple’s operating system history. In his recent report, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said that Apple is planning to power its new iOS update with AI and that this will make the update a significant one for iPhone users. And if Apple is cooking something for the fall event, then the updates will definitely arrive with the new generation of iPhones, as every year Apple introduces the new iPhone series during the fall event.

So we will just wait to see what big plans Apple has as the company generally keeps mum until the day of launch. However, rumours, speculations do suggests that the company is planning to integrate AI into its software platforms – iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, similar to what Samsung, Microsoft and Google are doing.
