Apple Pursues LG and Samsung in Quest for Bezel-Less iPhone Display

In a potential breakthrough, future iPhones could feature completely bezel-less displays, offering an immersive edge-to-edge viewing experience.

According to TheElec, as reported by AppleInsider, Apple has reached out to suppliers such as Samsung Display and LG Display with a request to develop an OLED display that eliminates the need for any front bezels. This would pave the way for a seamless screen experience.

The report suggests that Samsung and LG display departments will need to enhance thin-film encapsulation (TFE) and under-panel camera (UPC) technologies while also ensuring adequate antenna space to meet Apple’s specifications. However, the publication notes that these technologies are not yet ready for mass production.

TFE is a protective process for OLED panels that shields them from moisture and oxygen. On the other hand, UPC is a technology that hides the camera and other components beneath the display.

Furthermore, Apple prefers a flat bezel-less display rather than a curved one. The report indicates that Apple dismissed curved bezel-less OLEDs, such as those used in Samsung’s Galaxy S lineup, due to the optical distortion caused by the curved edges and their susceptibility to damage from external impacts.

While there is no specific timeline for the release of a completely bezel-less iPhone, this development holds significant promise. To learn more, you can read the full report here.
