Apple releases watchOS 9.6.1 with a big medical fix

Apple has just released the latest update to their watchOS, specifically version 9.6.1. This update is now available for the Apple Watch Series 4 and later models. The Series 4 was initially launched on September 21st, 2018. Users who own the Series 4, as well as the Series 8, Apple Watch SE models, and the Apple Watch Ultra, can now download and install this update. Notably, this is the first update since watchOS 9.6 was released on July 24th earlier this year.

In the upcoming month, Apple plans to release watchOS 10, which will introduce a new widget-based user interface for compatible Apple Watch models. While watchOS 9.6.1 is a minor update, Apple does mention that it includes a fix for a key issue preventing data access for apps that utilize the Movement Disorder API. This is particularly relevant for apps that track tremors and associated symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease.

For instance, H20 Therapeutics provides an app called Parky for Apple Watch users. It effectively tracks tremors and dyskinesia experienced by Parkinson’s patients in between doctor visits. This is made feasible by the app’s integration with Apple’s movement disorder API and the inertial sensors of the watch itself.

Dyskinesia refers to involuntary movements that affect individuals with Parkinson’s disease. In 94% of cases, the smartwatch app accurately recorded changes in symptoms matching the clinicians’ expectations based on the patient’s ongoing treatment. The remaining 6% of patients’ data was analyzed by clinicians to devise improved treatment strategies.

Prior to this update, Parkinson’s apps were unable to access the Movement Disorder API, resulting in the inability to provide doctors with important information regarding the effectiveness of a specific treatment plan for patients using Apple Watch. With H20’s Parky app, specifically designed for Parkinson’s patients, data from 288 daily data points can now be captured assuming continuous wear of the watch. A color-coded user interface is used, with the color green indicating fewer symptoms experienced by the patient.

To update your Apple Watch, ensure that your device is connected to its charger and within range of your iPhone, which must be connected to a Wi-Fi network. Installation will begin once your Apple Watch is charged to at least 50%. It is important not to restart or remove the device from the charger until the update process is complete.
