Apple TV+’s Silo delivers an immersive lesson in crafting rich worlds and sci-fi narratives

Not since the prime days of Lost have I found myself so captivated by a television drama as I am with the hit Apple TV+ series, Silo. Like Alice tumbling down the rabbit hole, each episode delves deeper into the show’s vast post-apocalyptic storyline, leaving viewers with more questions than answers. Silo is incredibly addictive, much like the intricate plot of Lost that enthralled fans. With its stellar cast and faithful adaptation of Hugh Howey’s Silo book series, it comes as no surprise that Apple has renewed the show for a second season.

In the gripping finale of Silo, now available for streaming on Apple TV+, we witnessed a jaw-dropping turn of events. The scene where Juliette embarks on her cleaning duty had me on the edge of my seat, holding my breath and unable to tear my eyes away. Although I’m not entirely certain of what I witnessed, I can confidently say that it was a resounding success. Hugh Howey must feel immense satisfaction as many viewers, including myself, are left with the same burning desire to read the books and find answers while eagerly awaiting Silo Season 2.

Some of the lingering questions I have pertain to Juliette’s fate. The final image of her surveying a post-apocalyptic wasteland, filled with countless silos, leaves me wondering what lies ahead. I also struggle to fully comprehend the dynamics between the cleaners, their wiping of the silo windows, the manipulated images within those windows visible to the silo’s citizens, and the fabricated images shown in the helmets of the cleaners. From my understanding, the view through the silo windows presented to the citizens is a falsified reality, concealing the existence of other silos. The cleaners, enticed by the illusion of a picturesque paradise in their helmets, return to “clean” the windows to share the “paradise” with the rest of the community. However, upon removing their helmets, they are exposed to toxic fumes and meet their demise. (Although I am puzzled as to why Juliette does not encounter any bodies when she steps outside). These are just a fraction of the questions swimming in my mind. Do the individuals inside the silo truly remain oblivious to the other silos? Is Bernard a villain or part of a morally ambiguous group attempting to protect others? As stated earlier, each revelation in the show only serves to deepen the mystery, drawing us further into the rabbit hole. Silo truly is a captivating and top-tier science fiction series.

To summarize, Silo revolves around the remaining 10,000 people on Earth confined within an underground silo, shielding them from the toxic environment outside. The truth about the silo, its purpose, and the world beyond is closely guarded, with strict consequences for those who question it. Rebecca Ferguson, who executive-produces and stars as Juliette, embarks on a quest for answers regarding a loved one’s murder, thrusting her into the heart of the silo’s enigmatic mysteries. Even in humanity’s final days, hierarchies persist, with those on the lower floors, known as the “Deep Down,” facing discrimination from the privileged upper floors. The silo’s IT chief possesses an abundance of knowledge, perhaps more than is advisable. The founders’ quasi-religion, complete with idiosyncratic funeral rituals and peculiarities like “forgiveness holidays,” maintains order and compliance among the majority. The tenth and final episode of Silo Season 1, titled “Outside,” is now available for streaming on Apple TV+. All in all, it has been an exhilarating journey thus far, and I eagerly anticipate what lies ahead in Season 2.
