Apple WWDC 2024: From auto-generating emojis to ChatGPT partnership with OpenAI, iOS 18 will be ‘super heavy’ on AI – Technology News

Apple is set to unveil its AI advancements at WWDC 2024 on June 10, although the features may not be as flashy as those presented by Google, Microsoft, or OpenAI. According to Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter for Bloomberg, Apple’s announcements will likely include “practical” AI applications such as transcribing voice memos and auto-generating emojis.

Additionally, Apple is rumoured to announce a partnership with OpenAI, integrating ChatGPT more deeply into its operating systems. Negotiations are also ongoing with Google for similar integration with its Gemini AI, and talks with Anthropic are reportedly in progress, too.

A significant feature expected at WWDC is a “smart recap” feature. This tool will reportedly summarise missed texts, notifications, and various media, such as web pages, news articles, and documents. This feature aims to manage the often overwhelming iOS notifications.

The Voice Memo app is also anticipated to receive AI-generated transcription capabilities. Current Apple features, like voicemail transcripts and system-wide captions, suggest this will be a natural extension of existing services.

Apple plans to improve other features with AI, including on-device Spotlight search, Safari Internet searches, and writing suggestions for emails and texts. Additionally, AI may be used to retouch photos and generate emojis based on text content, despite previous issues other companies have faced with similar features.

Siri is expected to receive certain enhancements, including a more natural-sounding voice and improved functionality on the Apple Watch. While Apple intends to perform as many AI tasks locally as possible, more complex operations will be processed on M2 Ultra-based servers.

Beyond AI developments, Apple may introduce an iOS 18 feature allowing users to change app icon colours more easily, a function which is currently available through an iOS Shortcuts app work-around. Another anticipated change is the flexibility to arrange app icons freely on the home screen, moving away from the enforced top-to-bottom, left-to-right layout, which has existed since 2007.

iOS 18 is widely reported as being the most ambitious iOS update in Apple history. As the company races to catch up with Google and Microsoft, all eyes will be on Apple to see how it balances security and privacy, parametres that are intrinsic to its devices and software.
