As 2023 Nears End, A Look At All Hindu Festivals In December

Dr Shripati Tripathi from Patna shared that December is the month of Margashirsha, dedicated to Lord Krishna. It started on November 28 and will continue till December 26. After this month, the Pausha month will begin. In the month of Margashirsha, many fasts and festivals will occur including Kaal Bhairav Jayanti and Utpanna Ekadashi.

Why is the month of Margashirsha considered special?

The new month began after the Kartik Purnima. As per astrologers, it is considered significant to worship Lord Krishna. As per the scriptures, there are many stories about this month. One such story is that it was during this month that Lord Krishna preached Geeta to his disciple, Arjun, a Pandav. Here is a list of festivals and fasts that will be observed this month-

December 5

This day marks Kaal Bhairav Jayanti. It is believed that Kaal Bhairav, who is a fierce avatar of Lord Shiva was born. The scriptures describe him as a punisher. By worshipping this form of Shiva, fear and planetary defects are removed.

December 8

Utpanna Ekadashi will be celebrated on this. People observe fasts to appease the Goddess Ekadashi. She is considered to be one of the protective powers of Lord Vishnu and part of Sapta Matrika.

December 10

Pradosh Vrat is a fast which is specifically observed only on a Pradosh Trayodashi day, that is 13th day of the fortnight of every month.

December 11

As per the Hindu calendar, the fourteenth day, also known as the Chaturdashi Tithi of every month is dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva. This monthly festival is known as Masik Shivaratri and is celebrated by ardent devotees.

December 12

Margashirsha Amavasya marks the culmination of 2023. The month is considered to be auspicious for Tirtha Snan which is also known as ritual bathing, especially on Purnima (full moon) and Amavasya (new moon).

December 16

Dhanu Sankranti will be celebrated on this day. Dhanu Sankranti is an auspicious festival which occurs when the Sun enters the zodiac sign of Sagittarius or the Dhanu Rashi.

December 17

Vivah Panchami marked the marriage of Lord Ram with Goddess Sita. It is believed that on this day, apart from marriage any kind of auspicious work will be fruitful.

December 18

This day will mark the celebration of Subrahmanya Shashti, Skanda Shashti and Champa Shashti.

December 20

Maasik Durga Ashtami fast is observed on this date. Durgashtami fasting is observed every month during the Ashtami Tithi. Devotees worship the Goddess and observe a day-long fast.

December 22

Gita Jayanti, Gita Mahotsav, Mokshada Ekadashi or Matsya Dvadashi marks the day when Lord Krishna shared his wisdom and preachings of Gita to Arjun on the battlefield of Kurukshetra.

December 25

Yet another Pradosh Vrat is set to take place in the month of December.

December 26

This day will mark Margashirsha Purnima, Dattatreya Jayanti, Tripura Bhairavi Jayanti, and Annapurna Jayanti.

December 27

Mandala Puja will mark the beginning of the Pausha maas.

December 28

Guru Pushya Yoga is an auspicious day to inaugurate new offices or shops, purchase precious metals or jewellery, buy new houses and much more.

December 30

Akhurath Sankashti Chaturthi is an important day for the devotees of Lord Ganesha. People observe fast to appease God and may get rid of obstacles in life.
