Box Office Collection: Ka Ching! Box Office collections may have set a weekend record

The cinema exhibition industry has achieved remarkable success with a combined gross box office collection of over ₹390 crore during the weekend of August 11 to 13. This period marks the busiest single weekend for the industry since the reopening of cinemas after the pandemic. The Multiplex Association of India (MAI) and Producers Guild of India (PGI) have declared this ₹390-crore gross box office collection as possibly the largest ever for a weekend in the industry’s history.

The weekend also set a new record in terms of admissions, with over 21 million people attending theaters across the country. This is the highest combined admissions record in the last 10 years.

The success of the box office collections can be attributed to the popularity of films like Rajinikanth’s “Jailer,” Sunny Deol’s “Gadar 2,” Akshay Kumar and Pankaj Tripathi’s “OMG 2,” and Chiranjeevi’s “Bhola Shankar.”

According to Sacnilk, “Jailer” has earned over ₹150 crore in net box office collection, while “Gadar 2” has achieved a three-day net domestic box office collection of over ₹134 crore. “OMG 2” and “Bhola Shankar” have recorded net collections of over ₹43 crore and ₹26 crore, respectively. “Jailer” was released on August 10, while “Gadar 2,” “OMG 2,” and “Bhola Shankar” were released on August 11.

Shibasish Sarkar, the president of PGI, expressed his enthusiasm about the turnout at theaters and the energy it has infused into the film industry. He stated, “Audiences are responding in numbers we have not seen for a very long time; even the early morning shows are getting sold out. This weekend has been a wonderful experience for people who love mainstream Indian films.”

Kamal Gianchandani, the president of MAI, also praised the footfalls and gross box office collections, stating that they have set new records in the industry. He debunked the notion that audience behavior has shifted solely towards streaming platforms, emphasizing that the cinema exhibition industry has greatly benefited from the long weekend and the studios’ aggressive marketing efforts. Regardless of location, multiplexes and single screens have operated at 70% occupancy in the past few days.

Gianchandani expressed confidence in the future growth of admissions, as filmmakers have lined up an aggressive content slate for the second half of the year. During the company’s Q1 earnings call, PVR Inox MD Ajay Bijli also mentioned a consistent month-on-month increase in collections and a reduction in volatility regarding Hindi film performance.
