Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Is Still Coming to PS4 and Xbox One, Will Be a ‘Premium’ Standalone Release

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will also be available on the older generation PS4 and Xbox One consoles, despite previous rumors suggesting otherwise. There was some confusion regarding a last-gen launch when TheGamingRevolution, a COD content creator, tweeted a picture from the Microsoft store that only displayed the Xbox Series S/X logo. This was unprecedented for the franchise, but it makes sense considering studios are taking advantage of the newer consoles’ hardware. However, the game’s teaser stated that both PlayStation generations would receive a release, so it felt unfair to the Xbox community. It turned out to be an error on the Microsoft store, which has now been corrected to include Xbox One as well.

Currently, the website leads to Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0’s store page, as Activision has planned a worldwide reveal scheduled for August 17 within the game. This in-game event follows the unveiling of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Vanguard, both of which were revealed inside the original Warzone game. Interestingly, on Steam, Modern Warfare 3 was listed as an add-on, contrary to previous reports claiming it would be a standalone $70 release. “As stated in numerous Activision Blizzard quarterly conference calls, Modern Warfare III is a premium release and will be priced accordingly at $70 USD,” stated the publisher in response to tipster CharlieINTEL. The term ‘add-on’ refers to how all CoD games will be packaged going forward, accessible within the Call of Duty HQ launcher.

This aligns with an InsiderGaming report that suggests beta codes for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 follow the same ‘concept ID’ as Modern Warfare 2, essentially reissuing last year’s codes. The central hub will display Call of Duty MW2, MW3, and Warzone in the same menu, making it more accessible to players with content carry-over. It has been confirmed that this year’s title will allow players to carry forward weapons, cosmetic items, operators, and skins unlocked in Modern Warfare 2. MW3 content will also be integrated into the Warzone experience, while Call of Duty: Mobile has been updated to include shared progression across the mainline games. More details on the latter will be revealed closer to the launch of Warzone Mobile.

Previous reports also mentioned that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will have at least two beta weekends for multiplayer testing. The first weekend will be exclusively for PlayStation players, scheduled to run from October 6-10. However, this may change as Microsoft’s attempts to acquire Activision for $69 billion continue. The second beta weekend, allegedly running from October 12-16, will include Xbox and PC players, and there are plans for campaign early access for pre-order customers.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will be released on November 10 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X.
