Capcom Confirms Resident Evil 4 Remake’s VR Mode to Launch as Free DLC on PS VR2

The virtual reality version of Resident Evil 4 remake will be available as free DLC on the PS5’s PS VR2. Developer Capcom announced on Twitter that RE4’s VR mode is currently in development and confirmed later that it will be included at no additional cost. Players will need to own a copy of the base game in order to access the DLC. Since Capcom has just started working on the new build, it is unlikely to launch alongside the main game on March 24 but may be released later.

This is the second time the game is receiving a VR port, as Capcom previously released the original 2005 version on the Oculus Quest 2 in 2021. It is unclear which parts of the remake will be playable on the PS VR2. However, based on previous instances, we can assume that the entire story will be available, with gameplay tailored to utilize the orb-like Sense controllers to simulate weapon recoil through vibrations. This announcement comes as Resident Evil Village also receives its own virtual reality version for the PS VR2’s launch. Owners of the main game will receive free access to this DLC, allowing them to take on the role of Ethan Winters and confront various enemies such as witches, wolves, dolls, and more, all in an effort to save Ethan’s abducted family from Mother Miranda. A demo version is also available to all PS VR2 owners.

Earlier this month, Resident Evil 4 remake showcased exclusive gameplay footage provided by GameInformer. The 12-minute footage took place in the fifth chapter, where secret agent Leon Kennedy teams up with Ashley Graham, who has been held captive in a Spanish village. One major change from the 2005 version is that Ashley sticks with Leon throughout the game. Though players can command her to keep her distance while stealthily taking down enemies, they cannot leave her in a safe location to facilitate gameplay. If she is captured by a villager, the player must chase after her and free her from her captor. Co-director Yasuhiro Ampo stated in an interview with GameInformer, “As a character, we wanted to have her by your side, so she left an impression. Having a character like Ashley and then having her basically disappear for a while felt like a waste. We wanted to avoid that in the remake.”

The RE4 remake also introduces field support agent Ingrid Hunnigan on the HUD, allowing players to freely move around while discussing mission status with her. In the original Resident Evil 4, the game would switch to a different communications screen reminiscent of a codec call, where players could see Leon and Hunnigan conversing via portrait displays, similar to a Zoom call. The upcoming remake also allows players to upgrade the durability of their knife at shops, which will be needed for the new parry mechanic, a feature that surprised many fans when it was revealed in the trailer last year.

Resident Evil 4 remake will launch on March 24 for PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X. As mentioned earlier, a virtual reality version of the game will be available as free DLC on the PS5/PS VR2.
