The Central Bureau of Investigation took over the a probe into the murder of INLD chief Nafe Singh Rathee on Monday evening. Haryana Home Minister Anil Vij broached the possibility in the state Assembly after the Congress moved an adjournment motion over Haryana’s law-and-order situation. Haryana Police officials later confirmed that the case had been handed over to the central agency. 12 people including a former MLA have been booked after the Indian National Lok Dal chief and a party worker were gunned down by unknown assailants on Sunday.
“If the House is only satisfied with a CBI probe, then I assure the members that we will hand over the case to the CBI,” Vij told the state Assembly on Monday.
“The investigation of the case is being handed over to the CBI. The identified accused are being tracked. Our five teams are carrying out an investigation into the matter. Action will be taken as per facts that emerge during the probe,” added Jhajjar Deputy Commissioner Captain Shakti Singh.
Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda had contended that the case might involve various angles that can only be investigated by a central agency. Meanwhile senior INLD leader Abhay Singh Chautala has accused the BJP-JJP government of failing to provide security to Rathee despite threats to his life. He had also sought a CBI probe into the attack.
The Haryana police has registered a case against four persons in connection with the case.
“We have registered an FIR based on the complaint received. Five teams have been constituted with 2 DSPs to arrest the accused. An investigation is underway. We are collecting physical and scientific evidence. We are collecting evidence from all CCTV cameras and also checking the suspected vehicle,” Jhajjar DSP Shamsher Singh said.
