CD Projekt Red has confirmed that the critically acclaimed game, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, has surpassed an impressive milestone, selling over 50 million copies worldwide. This remarkable achievement, combined with the overall sales of the entire franchise, including the previous two installments, The Witcher and The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, makes it one of the most successful series in gaming history, with a total of 75 million units sold. Currently ranking ninth on the list of best-selling titles in history, The Witcher 3 is just shy of Red Dead Redemption 2, which has sold 53 million copies. However, it is anticipated that these numbers will continue to grow, especially with the release of the next-gen update, which introduces exciting features like ray-tracing support, improved console performance, and various quality-of-life enhancements.
“This remarkable achievement truly showcases the tremendous strength of the franchise,” stated Piotr Nielubowicz, CFO of CD Projekt Red, during a video summarizing the company’s Q1 financial results. “We are incredibly excited about what the future holds and our upcoming projects, which are set in the Witcher universe.” The studio is currently developing a new Witcher trilogy, with plans to release each installment within a six-year timeframe. The first game in this trilogy, codenamed Witcher Polaris, was unveiled in March of last year and featured captivating snowy artwork. CD Projekt Red has also confirmed that they will be shifting from their in-house engine to Unreal Engine 5, ensuring even more impressive visuals in the sequels. With a solid foundation established in the first game, this ambitious plan seems well within reach for the talented team.

CD Projekt Red will also receive support from Epic Games for their full-blown remake of the first Witcher game, codenamed Canis Majoris. This remake will take an open-world approach while maintaining the same captivating story as the original 2007 game. Despite the previous remaster, which featured new character models and improved stability, this marks the first time CD Projekt Red is undertaking a complete remake of one of their own games. Additionally, the development of a multiplayer spin-off title, codenamed Sirius, recently underwent significant changes within The Molasses Flood studio. As part of a developmental restart, 29 employees were laid off to redefine the game’s framework. Notably, The Witcher multiplayer game will prominently feature a story mode.
CD Projekt Red’s highly anticipated title, Cyberpunk 2077, will also be in the spotlight at the upcoming Summer Game Fest. Specifically, the event will feature details about the Phantom Liberty expansion, which introduces actor Idris Elba as Solomon Reed, an FIA Agent for the New United States of America. This presentation is part of the exclusive Play Days category, providing a preview for media and influencers. Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest commences on June 9 at 12:30am IST in India and June 8 at 12pm PT in the US, with live coverage from the YouTube Theatre in Los Angeles. The event will be available for streaming across major platforms such as YouTube, Twitch, Twitter, and TikTok.
The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt is currently available on various platforms, including PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, and Nintendo Switch.
