Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of BSP with the Appointment of Eli Remolona Jr. as New Chief

POWERFUL QUORUM: BSP Celebrates Pearl Anniversary with Newly Appointed Governor Eli Remolona Jr.

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), despite the inclement weather in Manila last Friday evening, hosted a reception to celebrate its 30th anniversary. The gathering attracted top officials from the Philippine financial community, who eagerly awaited the introduction of the new central bank chief, Governor Eli Remolona Jr.

Remolona, appointed by President Marcos for a six-year term, brought a wealth of experience from his time at the Bank of International Settlements and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. This made him a relatively unknown figure to many Filipino bankers, prompting curiosity and anticipation.

During his speech, Remolona showcased his expertise and vision for the country’s monetary policies, banking supervision, and the payments system. He emphasized the surprising strength of the Philippines’ post-pandemic recovery, attributing it to the robustness of the banking system and its contribution as part of the solution.

Remolona also acknowledged the challenges the local economy still faces, particularly the declining yet still-high inflation rate. He highlighted the need to monitor and analyze data to make informed decisions regarding monetary policy.

The central bank chief further outlined his objective to enhance the country’s digitalization efforts, aiming for at least 50 percent of all transactions to be executed digitally by the end of this year. He showcased the progress made thus far, with digital payments currently accounting for 42 percent of all transactions, a significant increase from just 1 percent a decade ago.

Remolona’s comprehensive and confident speech left the audience reassured about the future of the Philippine financial system. Many bankers expressed satisfaction and confidence in Remolona’s leadership, believing that the country’s economic prosperity is in safe hands.
