Chennai Rains Today News Live Updates: (December 1) : Schools in Puducherry, Karaikal and Yanam are to remain shut after IMD has issued a ‘yellow’ alert as Cyclone Michaung likely to cross Tamil Nadu coast by Dec 4. The cyclone is likely to move west-northwestwards, intensify into a deep depression by December 2 and further into a cyclonic storm over Southwest Bay of Bengal around December 3. It is expected to reach near south Andhra Pradesh and adjoining north Tamil Nadu coasts by December 4 forenoon. Thereafter, it would move nearly northwards almost parallel to south Andhra Pradesh coast and cross South Andhra Pradesh during forenoon of December 5 between Nellore and Machilipatnam as a cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph.

The National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC), headed by Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba, on Friday reviewed preparedness of state governments and central ministries and departments for impending cyclone ‘Michaung’ in the Bay of Bengal. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has made 18 teams available to Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Puducherry and 10 additional teams have been kept ready. Rescue and relief teams of the Coast Guard, Army and Navy along with ships and aircraft have been kept ready on standby, the statement said. The cyclone is likely to move west-northwestwards, intensify into a deep depression by December 2 and further into a cyclonic storm over Southwest Bay of Bengal around December 3.

Coastal districts along north Tamil Nadu and neighbouring southern Andhra Pradesh are bracing for cyclone Michaung early next week. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is yet to share the exact location of the landfall.

Cyclonic storm to form over Bay of Bengal by December 2: IMD

The India Meteorological Department has forecast a cyclonic storm over the Bay of Bengal around December 2, the weather forecast bulletin on Thursday stated.

A well marked low pressure area lying over southeast Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a depression in the next 24 hours, the bulletin said. Further, the depression is likely to intensify gradually into a cyclonic storm around December 2, it said.

Fisherfolks are advised not to venture into southeast Bay of Bengal from Thursday (November 30) to December 3. Those out at sea are urged to return to Andaman and Nicobar Islands and coast by Thursday.

The weather department said heavy rainfall is likely over Puducherry from Thursday to December 4; Kerala and Mahe on Thursday and Friday and over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam from Saturday to December 4. Central Maharashtra and Marathwada are likely to receive light isolated rainfall with thunderstorm and hailstorm.
