Cyclone Michaung live updates: Most of Chennai remains submerged due to heavy rain under the impact of ‘Michaung’, which has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm. The storm, currently over Bay of Bengal, is likely to head towards the Andhra Pradesh coast. Heavy inundation has been reported from low-lying areas in Chennai while the runway at the airport has been closed till 11 pm. The cyclone is expected to make landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam around midnight.

Cyclone Michaung is expected to make landfall around midnight between Machalipatnam and Nellore in Krishna District of Andhra Pradesh.
Heavy rain has caused severe waterlogging in Chennai as cyclone Michaung approaches the North coast of Tamil Nadu before it heads towards Andhra Pradesh. Chennai airport has suspended operations, with 12 domestic outbound flights and four international flights being cancelled. Three incoming international flights were diverted to Bengaluru due to the weather conditions. Flights were seen grounded as rainwater entered the airport runway, prompting authorities to order its closure till 11 pm tonight.
Heavy rains hit parts of Andhra Pradesh on Monday under the influence of Cyclone Michaung as the state government issued an alert to the eight districts as it nears the southern coastal region before landfall. Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy held a review meeting on the cyclone with senior officials and set several relief efforts in motion. Also, an alert was issued to the districts of Tirupati, Nellore, Prakasam, Bapatla, Krishna, West Godavari, Konaseema, and Kakinada.
“Cyclone Michaung is moving north-westwards in south-west Bay of Bengal. It is moving at a speed of 8 km per hour and is currently 90 km from Chennai and 140 km from Nellore. It will cross the coast between Nellore and Machilipatnam as a strong storm near Bapatla on Tuesday morning. Due to this effect, there will be light to moderate rains in many places in Kostanhra today and tomorrow. Fishermen should not venture into the sea and people should stay alert,” according to the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority.
Cyclone Michaung Live: Public Holiday Tomorrow In Chennai, 3 Other Districts
Tuesday has been declared a public holiday in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts of Tamil Nadu in view of Cyclone Michaung. The Tamil Nadu government declared the public holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. All schools, colleges, educational institutions, and government offices, including the offices of public undertakings/corporations, boards, banks, and financial institutions in the four districts will be closed due to the harsh weather conditions. However, all essential services, such as police, fire service, local bodies, milk supply, water supply, hospitals and medical shops, power supply, transport, fuel outlets, hotels and restaurants, etc, and the offices engaged in disaster response, relief and rescue activities, shall function as usual.
“We have taken all preemptive measures in the district. Preventive measures have been taken to ensure there’s no loss of life and property. We have set up 57 relief camps in seven coastal mandals. We are moving people from the low-lying areas to relief camps. We have provided necessary facilities to all those in the relief camps. Medical facilities are also being provided along with food and accommodation. Financial assistance will be provided to those who leave the relief camps as per government orders. We will provide Rs 1000 to those who come alone and Rs 2,000 to families,” said Krishna District Collector P Rajababu.

In view of the fast-approaching Cyclone Michaung, the Tamil Nadu government has issued an advisory asking people to stay indoors and work from home. They have also been advised to keep their doors and windows shut, waterproof key documents and expensive items, and avoid taking shelter under trees. Residents have been urged to gather critical supplies such as non-perishable food items, water, and necessary medications.
Cyclonic storm Michaung has intensified to severe cyclonic storm at around 8:30 am on Monday, about 90 km from Chennai and 200 km from Puducherry, says India Meteorological Department. It is likely to intensify and cross South Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Machilipatnam during Tuesday forenoon with a maximum wind speed of 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph.
Sixteen trees uprooted in Chennai under the impact of Cyclone Michaung have been removed, said a police bulletin on Monday. As many as 17 subways have been closed due to waterlogging. A green corridor is being maintained from the airport to Anna Salai. No deaths or drowning/electrocution incidents have been reported thus far. The city has received 15 cm rainfall between 8:30 pm and 4:30 am and major roads where waterlogging was reported are being cleared.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has cautioned countrymen amid the approaching ‘Cyclone Michaung’, saying that he was in constant touch with the governments of states on the eastern coast to coordinate relief and rescue efforts. Speaking at a victory rally at the BJP headquarters in the national capital on Sunday, he also urged BJP workers in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh to join the relief and rescue efforts and support the local administration.
