China to Impose Export Restrictions on Chipmaking Materials as US Considers Further Curbs

In a move aimed at protecting national security and interests, China’s commerce ministry announced on Monday that it will implement controls on the export of certain metals widely used in the semiconductor industry. Exporters will now be required to obtain permission to ship gallium and germanium products, which are classified as strategic by Beijing. This comes in response to reports of the United States considering new restrictions on the export of high-tech microchips to China. Additionally, the United States and the Netherlands are planning to further restrict sales of chipmaking equipment to Chinese chipmakers as part of efforts to prevent the technology from being used for military purposes.

The controls will specifically apply to eight gallium-related products, including gallium antimonide, gallium arsenide, and gallium oxide, as well as six germanium products, such as germanium dioxide and germanium metal. Exporters will need to obtain export licenses and those who fail to do so or exceed the permitted volumes will be punished.

Infrared technology, fiber optic cables, and solar cells also utilize germanium, highlighting its significance in various industries.
