‘Converted to Marry Muslim Woman’, UP Official Ashish Gupta, Now Mohd Yusuf, Removed from Post

The incident came to light in September this year when the accused assumed his role as Naib Tehsildar in Uttar Pradesh’s Maudaha.

The wife of a revenue official has filed a police complaint against her husband alleging that he converted to Islam to marry a Muslim woman. As per the complaint, Ashish Gupta, a Naib Tehsildar who was posed in Uttar Pradesh’s Maudaha, allegedly changed his name to Mohammad Yusuf.

Gupta, who allegedly converted to Islam, was removed from his post on Thursday and attached to the collectorate as an initial inquiry found him breaching the employee code, Hindustan Times reported citing officials.

Stating that the Naib Tehsildar was violating the service rules, ADM, Hamirpur Dr Arun Mishra said, “He (Ashish Gupta) has been removed from his post and attached to the collectorate fill further notice.” He added that a report on his conduct had also been sent to the government.

Three more people were named in the FIR filed by Gupta’s wife, Aarti. All the three accused have been arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Police for facilitating the religious conversion. The police is also conducting raids at several places to track the Muslim woman with whom Gupta was allegedly in a relationship.

According to various media reports, the incident came to light in September this year when Gupta assumed his role as Naib Tehsildar in Maudaha. The controversy erupted after a mosque caretaker, Mohammad Mushtaq, reported that a non-Muslim named Mohammad Yusuf was coming to the mosque to pray.

Following the mosque caretaker’s complaint, the administration initiated an inquiry against Gupta. Later, his wife alleged that he was forced to convert to marry a Muslim woman.

Meanwhile, SP Hamirpur Diksha Sharma said the investigation into the claims of Gupat’s wife was ongoing.
