Could the iPhone 15 Face Potential Delays and Significant Shortages Until October?

Unfortunately, there is some bad news for those eagerly anticipating the release of the iPhone 15. It appears that the launch of the next-generation smartphone may experience a delay of a few weeks.

This information comes from Wamsi Mohan, a Global Research Analyst at Bank of America. In a research note obtained from a respected financial news site called Barron’s, Mohan predicts that the release of the iPhone 15 will be pushed back to October, rather than the usual September release date that Apple tends to follow. However, it’s important to approach this prediction with some skepticism as Mohan does not provide a clear explanation for why he believes there will be a delay.

Interestingly, a recent report from The Information, a reputable tech news site, may shed some light on the potential reasons behind the delay. According to sources familiar with the matter, Apple is reportedly facing manufacturing challenges in assembling the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models. These sources suggest that the company’s suppliers are using a new manufacturing process to reduce the size of the bezel around the display, allowing for a larger screen while maintaining a similar overall device size compared to older models.

It’s worth noting that this “new” manufacturing process is not entirely new. The Information reveals that it was previously used for the Apple Watch 7 in 2019, which also experienced a delay of approximately one month due to the same manufacturing challenges.

In the case of the iPhone 15, The Information predicts that Apple may choose to produce fewer high-end units rather than delaying the launch altogether. However, the report suggests that there may be more severe shortages for the iPhone 15 Pro Max compared to the iPhone 15 Pro. So far, there have been no reports or rumors regarding any production issues with the base iPhone 15 model.

As for the likelihood of a delay, it is difficult to say for certain. Historically, iPhone launches have rarely experienced delays, but there have been instances in the past. The most recent example is the iPhone 14 Plus, which had customers waiting several weeks for its arrival in 2022. However, Apple may have taken lessons from previous incidents and prepared accordingly. Research from the DSCC (Digital Supply Chain Consultants) indicates that the company has been stockpiling smartphone displays to meet consumer demand and minimize any potential shortages.

The silver lining in all of this is that even if there is a delay, it is not expected to be an extended one. This has happened before, with the iPhone 12 facing a delay of a few weeks in 2020 due to global supply constraints. We have been in similar situations before, and a little patience may be required once again.
