Developer Investigating Performance Issues with The Last of Us Part I’s PC Port in Poor Technical Condition

The highly anticipated release of The Last of Us Part I on PC has been met with negative reviews on Steam. Currently, the game has a 33 percent positive rating due to various performance issues. Since its launch, players have reported hard crashes, stuttering, poor optimization, and long loading times. Naughty Dog, the developer behind the game, had originally planned to release it on March 3 but delayed it to March 28 to ensure a smooth debut. Unfortunately, it seems that the launch did not go as planned.

Naughty Dog has acknowledged the issues and stated that they are actively investigating and prioritizing updates to address the problems in upcoming patches. It is worth noting that media outlets and content creators did not receive review copies of the game prior to its release, which is unusual for Sony. The porting of the game to PC was handled by Iron Galaxy, the same group responsible for the disappointing PC port of Batman: Arkham Knight in 2015. While they did a decent job with Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection in 2022, The Last of Us Part I’s port appears to have been rushed.

Gadgets 360 can confirm that players have experienced issues with the game’s ‘Shader Building’ process, which is time-consuming and can cause random freezes. The PC settings for The Last of Us Part I prioritize CPU usage, resulting in micro stutters, while the graphics memory quickly reaches its limit on medium settings. Players have also reported crashes while idling in the main menu and encountering loading screens during cutscenes.

One Steam user shared their experience with the game: “Pre-purchased & pre-loaded. Launched it as soon as it was ready. Went to the settings. Turns out this game is eating up nearly 10GB of VRAM at 1440p max settings (game defaulted the settings to maximum). I’m running an RTX 3080 Ti with 12GB VRAM, mind you. Never could get past the menu screen which always crashes when the game displays a notification at the bottom right corner that reads ‘BUILDING SHADERS’.”

Users on the Steam Deck have also reported issues, with shaders taking an hour to build and the game running at 30fps on low-medium graphics settings. It is important to note that Steam only allows a two-hour playtime before refund requests can be made. Poor game optimization has been a recurring problem for PC gamers, as seen in titles like Gotham Knights and the recently released Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, which suffer from micro stutters even on the lowest settings. Although Hogwarts Legacy on PC also requires shader building upon each launch, its optimization is not as problematic.

The Last of Us Part I is now available on PC through Steam and Epic Games Store. However, it is advised to hold off on purchasing the game until performance patches are released.
