Diablo 4 Becomes Third-Biggest Game Of 2023 After Huge Start; PS5 Continues To Soar In US

Circana, the renowned research company previously known as NPD, has recently unveiled its comprehensive report on video game sales in the US for the month of June 2023. Excitingly, Diablo IV and the PlayStation 5 emerged as the clear frontrunners in the charts.

With its groundbreaking success, Diablo IV secured the top spot as the best-selling game of June, instantly placing it as the impressive third best-selling game of the entire year thus far. This remarkable accomplishment positions Diablo IV closely behind The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Hogwarts Legacy. In just five days, Diablo IV generated a stunning $666 million in sales, making it the fastest-selling game ever developed by Blizzard. While the specific sales number for Diablo IV remains undisclosed by Blizzard, the game’s unprecedented performance speaks for itself.

Several other highly anticipated releases from June also made their mark in the top 20 best-selling games of the month. Notably, Final Fantasy XVI secured the second spot, followed closely by Street Fighter 6 at number three. F1 2023 and Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life also found success, ranking at numbers 15 and 17 respectively. Street Fighter 6 experienced phenomenal launch-month sales that were more than twice that of its predecessor, Street Fighter V, released back in February 2016.

Shifting the focus to mobile gaming, the top 10 highest-spending titles in the US during June were Candy Crush Saga, Roblox, Royal Match, Coin Master, Monopoly Go, Gardenscapes, Township, Pokemon Go, Jackpot Party – Casino Slots, and Homescapes.

Overall, total spending on games in the US witnessed a 7% year-over-year rise, amounting to a staggering $4.1 billion in June 2023. Interestingly, sales specifically for consoles and PCs in June 2023 skyrocketed, surging by over 50% compared to the same period last year. However, total spending on games for the first half of 2023 remained relatively unchanged at $22.8 billion. Console spending experienced an impressive 8% increase during this period, while non-mobile subscription revenue also saw a minor rise. Sadly, these gains were unable to offset declines in the mobile, PC, cloud, and non-console VR markets.

Shining a spotlight on hardware, the PlayStation 5 reigns supreme, emerging as the bestselling console for June 2023 in the US, both in terms of units sold and total dollar sales. The sales figures for PlayStation hardware reached their highest point since June 2008, highlighting the immense popularity of the PS5. In fact, June 2023 witnessed the highest unit sales of PlayStation systems since June 2010. It comes as no surprise that the PS5 continues to dominate as the bestselling console for units sold and revenue generated in 2023.

Hardware spending as a whole experienced a remarkable 22% surge in June 2023, reaching a total of $454 million. This marks the highest hardware spending recorded during a June month since June 2008, when it reached a staggering $617 million. The PS5 specifically enjoyed significant growth in sales during June 2023, while the Xbox Series X|S and Switch platforms witnessed declines.

Looking at the year-to-date figures, spending on hardware in the US during 2023 was 23% higher compared to the same period in the previous year, totaling an impressive $2.6 billion.

Significantly, spending on accessories also witnessed a 14% increase in June 2023, reaching $214 million. The top-selling accessories during the month included the PS5 DualSense controllers, with the DualSense Edge offering the highest sales in terms of revenue.

The collective spending on games, hardware, and accessories in the US during June 2023 amounted to a remarkable $4.7 billion, representing a notable 9% increase. This makes June 2023 the second-highest spending month ever recorded in the US during the month of June, only surpassed by June 2021’s $4.8 billion, which can be attributed in part to the impact of the pandemic and stay-at-home guidelines. Furthermore, the total spending on all segments of the gaming market in the US for the first half of 2023 reached $26.6 billion, exhibiting a 2% increase.
