Director of ‘Baldur’s Gate 3’ Provides Guidance on Choosing Your First Playable Character

The creative director of Baldur’s Gate 3 advocates for players to craft their own character for their initial playthrough and refrain from assuming the role of the pre-made origin characters.

During the latest episode of the Dropped Frames podcast, Swen Vincke of Larian Studios expressed that creating a custom character allows the player to observe the complete journey of these origin characters from an outside perspective, delving into their inner psyche.

“We introduce these origin characters to enhance replayability,” Vincke explained. “I would always choose a custom character and uncover my companions. The origins become significant when you replay the game.”

“However, there’s nothing wrong with selecting an origin character. It’s just that the entire origin system revolves around the question, ‘In whose head do you want to place the camera?’,” he justified. Each origin character – Astarion, Gale, Karlach, Lae’zel, Shadowheart, The Dark Urge, and Wyll – possesses their own unique history and secrets to unveil throughout the playthrough.

Additionally, Baldur’s Gate 3 offers a staggering 17,000 possible endings for the role-playing game, meaning these companions will react based on the player’s choices and alignment.

“They work better if you’ve already played the game once because then you can view it through their eyes. What was Shadowheart thinking the first time she encountered you? And now you understand how they perceive things,” Vincke concluded.

Baldur’s Gate 3 provides an extensive range of customization options for players who wish to embark on their own journey within Faerûn. Nonetheless, developers from other studios advise against viewing the game as the “new standard” for all RPGs.
