In a recent interview, it has been confirmed that Gabe Amatangelo, the director responsible for the highly-anticipated expansion of “Cyberpunk 2077” called “Phantom Liberty,” will also be directing a full sequel to the game.
Amatangelo revealed this exciting news in an interview with Bloomberg (via PC Gamer). He stated that once the work on “Phantom Liberty” is completed, he will continue his directorial role in the currently-untitled sequel to “Cyberpunk 2077.”
In addition to “Phantom Liberty,” Amatangelo is currently the director of “Cyberpunk 2077” and has been leading the development of the game since 2021. He played a pivotal role in the development of last year’s patch 1.5, which marked a significant turning point for the game following its tumultuous launch in 2020.
The sequel to CD Projekt Red’s “Cyberpunk” was announced in October 2022 and is currently being developed under the codename Orion. While specific details about the sequel are limited, CD Projekt Red has hinted that it will push the boundaries of the “Cyberpunk” universe and continue to explore its dark future.
A group strategy update also suggests that the “Cyberpunk” sequel will feature a multiplayer component, although precise details about the game have yet to be confirmed as the studio focuses on completing “Phantom Liberty.”
Set to be released this year, “Phantom Liberty” will serve as the sole expansion for “Cyberpunk 2077” and will take players to a new zone in Night City called Dogtown, where they will embark on a mission to rescue the president of the New United States of America.
The expansion will see the return of Keanu Reeves in his role as Johnny Silverhand, and Idris Elba will join the series to portray a sleeper agent for the New United States.
Last week, CD Projekt Red confirmed that “Phantom Liberty” will launch on September 26 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
The release date was announced with a new trailer at the Xbox Games Showcase (June 11), providing a glimpse of Idris Elba’s character in action and explaining why the protagonist V from “Cyberpunk” is drawn into the rescue mission.
