According to Dr Tyagi, individuals with high blood sugar, especially those whose blood sugar spikes rapidly, should steer clear of traditional sweets and fried foods. Traditional sweets are often laden with refined sugar, which can cause an immediate spike in blood sugar levels. Instead, Dr Tyagi recommends preparing sugar-free sweets at home, offering a safer and more diabetic-friendly option.

For those who enjoy making sweets at home, ingredients like stevia grass or candy leaf can be used as sweeteners in place of sugar. Stevia is a natural sweetener derived from the leaves of the stevia plant. It has been used for centuries in various cultures, including Japan, China, India, Mexico, South America, and Africa. Stevia can sweeten a wide range of dishes and beverages without causing abrupt blood sugar spikes.

Dr Tyagi also advises against adding extra sugar to mildly sweet dishes. For example, khoya, a dairy product made from milk solids, already possesses a natural sweetness. Adding more sugar to it is unnecessary, especially for diabetic patients. Instead, he suggests consuming naturally sweet fruits, which contain sugars but are accompanied by dietary fibre. The fibre content helps regulate sugar absorption, preventing rapid blood sugar spikes. Additionally, small quantities of dried fruits can be consumed as a snack.

In the event of elevated blood sugar levels, Dr. Tyagi recommends taking prompt action. If your blood sugar rises, make sure to take your prescribed medications on time. Regular exercise can assist in controlling blood sugar levels, so consider incorporating physical activity into your daily routine. If your sugar levels are still high, you may want to reduce your calorie intake and opt for lighter, more balanced meals. Staying well-hydrated is essential, and drinking sufficient water can aid in blood sugar management.
