EA Sports FC 24 Unveils Gameplay Trailer: Enhanced Player-Specific PlayStyles, HyperMotionV, and More

EA Sports FC 24, set to launch on September 29, has unveiled a captivating gameplay deep dive trailer, providing a detailed insight into the technological advancements coming to this year’s football simulation game. The latest installment introduces HyperMotionV technology, which aims to deliver a heightened level of realism in player movement and interaction. Alongside this, the game introduces player-specific abilities known as PlayStyles and welcomes women footballers to the controversial yet popular Ultimate Team mode. Notably, this is the first EA Sports football title to break away from the ‘FIFA’ branding, as EA’s relationship with the global football organization ended due to financial disagreements regarding a new licensing deal.

With EA Sports FC 24, the focus, as always, is on achieving unparalleled realism. The game utilizes the revolutionary HyperMotionV technology, which captures volumetric data from over 180 professional matches to recreate them within the game. This means that players can now be directly captured from their real-life matches, eliminating the need for them to visit the studio and put on motion capture suits. All the data is collected from the in-stadium cameras, enabling EA to incorporate authentic animations such as Erling Haaland’s iconic karate kick goal against his former club Borussia Dortmund. During the reveal event, EA boasted that developers could implement the latest animations into the game’s engine within days of their occurrence on the actual pitch.

While playing the game, players may notice the emergence of RPG-like icons, representing unique signature abilities specific to each player. In collaboration with leading statisticians Opta Sports, EA Sports has assigned PlayStyles to players, allowing defenders like Liverpool FC’s Virgil van Dijk to execute clean stop tackles, effectively stealing the ball and triggering counterattacks. Successful slide tacklers will now experience the ball sticking to their feet instead of randomly bouncing off, which would result in a loss of possession. Players have the potential to possess multiple PlayStyles, with world-class footballers identified under the PlayStyle+ label, indicating heightened abilities. However, it remains uncertain how beneficial this feature is to players, as past FIFA games have demonstrated a lack of clarity in this aspect.

Renowned players like Neymar Jr., who are known for their skill moves, are now bestowed with a Trickster+ style, although it seems debatable whether this would genuinely alter their performance. In total, there are 34 distinct PlayStyles available, which can also be applied in the player career mode for enhanced personalization and the creation of a more formidable squad in the Ultimate Team segment. Ideally, the presence of these indicators can be disabled to avoid any potential distraction during gameplay. EA Sports also highlighted the return of the Frostbite Engine in FC24, emphasizing its ability to realistically depict the movement of fabric on footballers’ kits. Although these improvements may seem subtle, EA consistently strives to enhance the game’s visual appeal.

In a significant development, EA Sports FC24 introduces women footballers to the Ultimate Team mode, allowing them to play alongside or against male players. Rather than having a separate division, female players are now integrated into FUT. If a male and female player share similar attributes and height, they are expected to perform at a comparable level, thus competing with other highly-rated players. Naturally, the presence of this mixed gender gameplay has been met with resistance from some fans. In response, John Shepherd, VP of Electronic Arts, expressed the company’s vision of inclusivity and explained that integrating women’s football into Ultimate Team aligns with their commitment to expand the game’s reach and welcome a diverse range of fans.

According to Shepherd, Ultimate Team allows for a combination of players from different backgrounds, providing an opportunity to build the best team possible. This approach is believed to benefit football as a whole and cater to the interests of existing fans while attracting new ones. EA Sports FC 24 will be available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, and the Nintendo Switch starting from September 29. Pre-ordering the Ultimate Edition grants players seven-day early access, beginning on September 22.
