Former Madhya Pradesh chief minister and senior BJP leader Uma Bharti said that she does not “rely” on exit polls.

“I wish my party forms the government in Madhya Pradesh. I respect MP chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan a lot,” Uma Bharti said.

Asked about exit polls, she said, “They predict that a party will win between 112 and 130 seats (out of 230 seats in MP). Now, if that party gets 112 seats and loses elections, the exit pollsters claim they have proved right. But if that party gets 120 seats and wins, the exit polls claim their prediction was right.”

A voter turnout of 76.22% was recorded in Madhya Pradesh assembly elections- highest in the state’s history.

80.66 per cent of the total 8.52 lakh voters of the state exercised their franchise in these polls. Female voter turnout was recorded higher than male voters in the polls held on November 7.

Since 1993, no government in Rajasthan has been re-elected for a second term. The state has alternated between the BJP and the Congress. Ashok Gehlot of the Congress is currently the chief minister of Rajasthan.

So which party this time, Rajasthan?

The exit polls have not always predicted the results correctly as accuract of the predictions depends on the methodology used, sample size of the polls, demographic and economic factors that are involved. Exit polls may also miss on ‘silent voters’- what if someone says they voted for X but actually voted for Y?

So yes, exit polls can be wrong and sometimes way off.

Elections were held in four states while Telangana is still voting. In Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, Congress is eyeing a comeback while in Madhya Pradesh Congress had won the 2018 polls. BJP came back to power in 2020 so this is payback time for Congress.

In Telangana, there is a triangular contest as Congress and BJP are hoping to stop BRS chief K Chandrashekhar Rao’s hat-trick.

What is expected to be the result, you ask?

In 2018, Congress won 68 seats in Chhattisgarh while BJP secured 15 seats. The CSDS – ABP News poll gave 52 seats to BJP and 35 seats to Congress. C Voter-Republic TV gave Congress 45 seats and 39 seats for BJP while News 24-Pace Media gave 39 seats to BJP and 48 to Congress.

Axis My India – India Today gave 60 seats to Congress and 26 to BJP and News X- NETA gave 42 seats to ]BJP and 41 to Congress.

Today’s Chanakya predicted 36 seats for BJP and 50 for Congress.

So the pollsters were not at all accurate with respect to the predictions. Good reminder that exit polls CAN be wrong.

In 2018, MNF won 26 seats, Congress secured 5 while ZPM got 8 seats. CVoter – Republic TV had then given Congress 16-20 seats and MNF 14-18 seats. CNX-Times gave Congress 18 seats and BJP 16 seats.

Gujjula Premender Reddy, Telangana BJP’s general secretary, urged the Election Comission to delay the exit polls. Voters in line are allowed to exercise their franchise even post 5.30 pm when the predictions will be out, he said.

As voting in Telangana is still on, there is an embargo on airing exit polls before 5.30 pm by the Election Commission.

Telugu star Mahesh Babu and Vijay Deverakonda arrived at Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad to cast their votes in the ongoing Telangana assembly elections. Taking to Instagram, Mahesh Babu shared a picture with his wife Namrata which a caption, “Cast your vote! We just did! #EveryVoteMatters.”

Vijay Deverakonda said, “I heard that the polling percentage is a little low. I request all the young boys and girls who have their voting ID and election card to come and vote. Come with your families and vote, you should do it.”

PM Modi addressed beneficiaries of different schemes as part of the Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra saying, “In various corners of the country there is such enthusiasm for the yatra and there is a reason for it, as people have seen Modi, his work, in the last 10 years and therefore, they have immense confidence in the government and its efforts.”

“People have also seen that period when past governments used to consider themselves ‘mai-baap’ of the people. Therefore, even after decades of independence, a big portion of the population was deprived of basic facilities,” the PM said.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi hailed the healthcare programme initiated by the Rajasthan government while inaugurating a new block at a private hospital in Wayanad. Rahul Gandhi said, “I think at the national level we need to rethink the way we think about healthcare and I think one of the guarantees that the national government should think about is healthcare at really low cost, especially to the poor people. We have done some work on this in Rajasthan and hopefully if we come to power in 2024, we will try and implement these types of ideas across the nation.”

Telangana recorded a voter turnout of 51.89 per cent till 3 pm in the assembly polls that is currently underway for 119 seats. Election Commission data showed that Medak recorded a voter turnout of 69.33 per cent, Mahabubabad 65.05 per cent, Adilabad 62.34 per cent, Hanumankonda 49 per cent and Hyderabad 31.17 per cent till 3 pm.

Polling is currently underway in Telangana to 119 constituencies. The state is witnessing a three-way contest between the incumbent Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) led by incumbent chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao, Congress, and BJP.

Madhya Pradesh is currently ruling by the BJP with Shivraj Singh Chouhan serving as the chief minister. The elections took place on November 17 for the 231 seats assembly.

Elections in Rajasthan were held on November 25 for 199 assembly seats. Rajasthan is currently ruled by Congress under the leadership of chief minister Ashok Gehlot.

Chhattisgarh was the only state that voted in two phases. The election to the 90-member assembly was held on November 7 and November 17. Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are going head-to-head in the state.

The Election Commission of India (ECI), in a notification, informed that the exit polls can be out after 5:30 pm.

“In Commission’s Notification No. 576/Exitl2023/SDRIV 01.1 dated 3pt October 2023 for the words and figures “7:00 AM on 7th November 2023(Tuesday) and 6.30 PM on 30th November 2023 (Thursday)” the words and figures 7:00 AM on 7th November 2023(Tuesday) and 5.30 PM on 30th November 2023 (Thursday) may be substituted,” the ECI stated.

The Election Commission, on several occasions, ensures a level playing field for all parties as authorities seized freebies, drugs, cash and liquor worth over ₹1766 crore during the election process. Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot predicted that the BJP is not going to win in any of the five poll-going states ahead of the exit polls. “No matter what exit polls say, Congress will form the government in Rajasthan. BJP is not winning in any of the 5 states,” he said.

These elections in five states are crucial as they are taking place months before the Lok Sabha elections scheduled for April-May next year.

The results of the five assembly elections will be declared on Sunday- December 3.

The election dates for the five states are as follows: Mizoram on November 7, Chhattisgarh on November 7 and November 17, Madhya Pradesh on November 17, Rajasthan on November 25, and Telangana on November 30.
