Elon Musk’s X Sues Nonprofit That Tracks Hate Speech, Disinformation

Social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, filed a lawsuit on Monday against a nonprofit organization dedicated to combating hate speech and disinformation. X accuses the nonprofit, the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), of making false claims and influencing advertisers to withhold their investment on the platform.

Earlier, it was reported that X, which is owned by Elon Musk, had sent a letter to the CCDH, warning of potential legal action and seeking unspecified damages.

In response to the letter, the CCDH’s lawyers condemned X for intimidating those who bravely stand against incitement, hate speech, and harmful online content. They also refuted X’s allegations, stating that they lack any factual basis.

The lawsuit stems from a media report published in July, which highlighted the CCDH’s research findings on the increase of hate speech targeting minority communities on the X platform.

X and its CEO, Linda Yaccarino, publicly denounced the report as false and baseless. They claimed that the metrics used in the research were inaccurate, misleading, and outdated, primarily from the period shortly after Twitter’s acquisition.

In a blog post on Monday, X stated that the CCDH gained unauthorized access to its data and accused the nonprofit of scraping data from its platform, thereby violating X’s terms of service.

X reiterated that the metrics presented in the research were taken out of context, leading to unfounded claims against the platform.

The CCDH did not provide a comment outside regular business hours in response to the request for a statement.

X recently filed lawsuits against four unnamed entities in Texas and Bright Data, an Israeli company, for engaging in data scraping.
