The University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided to update the syllabi of the UGC-National Eligibility Test (UGC-NET) for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and for the eligibility test for appointment as assistant professors in various subjects. The UGC will soon form an expert committee to undertake this work.
The UGC-NET examinations are held twice a year in 83 subjects, usually in June and December, and thousands of students attend these examinations.
Last update in 2017
In a statement here on Tuesday, UGC Chairman M Jagadesh Kumar said that the UGC last initiated the process to update the syllabi of UGC-NET subjects in 2017. “However, after launching the National Education Policy (NEP) in 2020, there have been considerable developments in higher education to impart multi-disciplinary curricula and holistic education,” he said adding that the UGC decided at a meeting on November 3 that an exercise to update the syllabi of the subjects of UGC-NET may be undertaken.
Prof. Kumar said the UGC will form an expert committee and undertake this exercise. “Candidates will be given sufficient time before this new syllabus is introduced in UGC-NET so that the changeover happens smoothly,” he assured. The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducts the UGC-NET tests, which is a computer-based test with two papers.
