The Manipur incident involving two Kuki women has caused shockwaves across the country. An image of two men, dressed in what appears to be RSS uniform, has gone viral with claims that they are among the accused individuals. CPI(M) politburo member Subhasini Ali tweeted the image, urging people to recognize them by their clothes. The image has been linked to the incident through screenshots of the viral video and a BBC Telugu article reporting the arrest of one of the accused. The image has also been shared on Facebook by the official pages of CPIM Telangana and CPIM Vizag, both condemning the RSS and blaming them for the incident.
However, upon fact-checking, it was found that the man on the right in the viral image is actually the state vice-president of Manipur BJP, Chidananda Singh. He had posted the photo on Facebook in October 2022 after attending an event organized by the RSS. The accused individual seen in the viral video has been identified as Heradas and was arrested from Thoubal district. Chidananda Singh clarified on Twitter that the viral photo was of him and his son, and that they were not involved in any such crimes. He also wrote a letter to the director general of police, requesting legal action against those spreading misinformation. Manipur Police confirmed that a case had been registered and they are working to identify and arrest the culprits behind the false claims.
Subhasini Ali later apologized for retweeting the false claims and expressing her regret for causing any unintentional embarrassment. Ultimately, it was concluded that the viral image did not depict the accused individuals in the Manipur incident, but rather the Manipur state vice-president of BJP and his son in RSS uniform.
