Farmers protest updates: Ahead of the ‘Dilli Chalo’ / ‘Chalo Delhi’ march by the agitated farmers, the Delhi Traffic Police has issued an advisory for the commuters. According to the police, there will be diversions around the Singhu Border (Delhi-Haryana). A sea of farmers from Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh have called for the march on February 13 (Tuesday) to demand a law guaranteeing MSP for their produce, one of the conditions they had set when they agreed to withdraw their agitation in 2021.

Live Law reported on Monday that a petition was filed before the Punjab and Haryana High Court challenging the “obstructive actions” of the central and state governments, including sealing of border between Haryana and Punjab in order to “prevent the farmers from exercising their constitutional right to assembly and protest peacefully.”

“The plea also questions the suspension of mobile internet services and bulk SMS in several districts of Haryana including Ambala, Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Jind, Hisar, Fatehabad, and Sirsa, stating that, it “further exacerbate the situation, depriving the citizens of their right to information and communication,” the report said.

Farmers’ leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal alleged that many agriculturists, who were coming from other states including Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh to support the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march, have been detained and sought their release.

Dallewal claimed that several farmers coming from Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka, owing allegiance to SKM have been detained in Bhopal.

“On one side, they (the Centre) are holding dialogues with us and on the other hand they are detaining our people. Then how will this dialogue take place?” said Dallewal.

“We have told the government that it should release our persons. The government needs to create a positive atmosphere for dialogue,” he added.

Farmers protest LIVE: SC extends Ashish Mishra’s interim bail in Lakhimpur Kheri violence case

The Supreme Court on Monday extended Ashish Mishra’s interim bail in connection with the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case till the next date of hearing. On January 25, 2023, the top court granted interim bail for eight weeks to Ashish Mishra and imposed various conditions. Later, it was extended from time to time.

The Supreme Court had also clarified that any attempt by Ashish Mishra or his family to influence witnesses and try to delay the trial may lead to the cancellation of his bail. The court has also directed Mishra to mark his attendance at the concerned police station.

Ashish Mishra, the son of Union Minister Ajay Mishra, moved the Supreme Court to challenge the Allahabad High Court, which denied bail to him in connection with the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case.

Mishra allegedly ran over the farmers who were protesting against the Center’s three farm laws. He was arrested on October 9 and granted bail in February 2022.

Notably, one of the demands of the farmers who have announced a protest in Delhi on 13 February is “justice for the Lakhimpur Kheri victims”.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar launched a scathing against the Modi government regarding the stringent measures taken by the police to prevent farmers’ entry into Delhi.

Farmers have announced to launch of a protest in the national capital Delhi to press their demands about the Minimum Support price (MSP) law guarantee, monthly pension, implementation of the Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations, and debt waiver among others.

Shivakumar on the X platform wrote that the Union Government failed to fulfil its 2021 promise of implementing the MSP law.

He added that over “700 farmers lost their lives during the last protest, but our govt continues to play with their sentiments & their future with unfulfilled promises”.

Lashing out at the security arrangements on Delhi borders he said PM Modi-led Centre is stopping the farmers from protesting for their rights.

“Our farmers have every right & reason to protest against these injustices and we stand with them in this fight!” Karnataka Deputy CM Shivakumar wrote.

At the Shambhu border near Ambala in Haryana, the police has placed concrete blocks, sandbags, barbed wires and anti-riot vehicles on the road.

Iron sheets have been installed along the two sides of the road on the Ghaggar flyover to prevent protesters from throwing police barricades off it. Water cannons and Vajra vehicles have been stationed and the Ghaggar river bed below has been dug up to prevent movement of vehicles. Pedestrians were seen crossing the shallow stream on foot.

A police official said the Rajiv Gandhi Sports Stadium in Sector 10 of Ambala has been declared a temporary detention centre.
