Major leaders of every party campaigned in the state, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi contesting from the Varanasi constituency for the third consecutive time, and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi contesting from his family bastion of Rae Bareli for the first time. What happened in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) swept away Uttar Pradesh in the previous general elections, winning 62 out of 80 seats in the state.
