First-ever Integration: Mercedes-Benz Introduces ChatGPT to Cars

Luxury car brand Mercedes-Benz is introducing a new US-only beta program for its MBUX Voice Assistant, which will now be powered by ChatGPT. By joining the beta, drivers of over 900,000 vehicles equipped with MBUX will have the opportunity to engage in more dynamic conversations with the onboard AI. In an official announcement, Mercedes-Benz expressed its desire to enhance the voice assistant beyond its current capabilities of predefined tasks and responses. By integrating ChatGPT’s advanced language model, MBUX’s natural language understanding will be greatly improved, expanding the range of topics to which it can respond. This means that customers will not only be able to issue voice commands but also ask the AI for detailed information about their destination or even receive suggestions for new dinner recipes.

To enable this program, Mercedes is incorporating Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI Service, which guarantees enterprise-grade security, privacy, and reliability, according to the automaker. All conversation data will be collected, anonymized, and analyzed in the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud. The company assures customers that it will have full control over all IT processes and guarantees the protection of customer data from any form of misuse. Microsoft will not have access to this data.

For a sneak peek at the upgraded MBUX in action, tech news site Electrek has published videos showcasing its features. The new MBUX utilizes both the dashboard screen and its onboard voice to provide answers to user queries. For instance, when asked for suggestions on the best local beaches, the AI displays a text list of nearby locations and recommends activities like surfing. It can even tell jokes, although they might not be the best.

The beta program will commence on June 16 and will be available exclusively in the United States. Eligible customers can join by issuing the voice command “Hey Mercedes, I want to join the beta program” to MBUX. From there, they will receive instructions on how to install the ChatGPT patch, which may involve connecting a mobile device to the AI. A complete list of supported vehicles can be found on Mercedes-Benz’s website, with over 25 models ranging from sedans to SUVs.

The beta program is expected to last three months, after which it will be temporarily taken offline. Mercedes will then use the data collected to further enhance the AI before an eventual full-scale launch. It is unclear whether the program or the final version will be expanded to other regions or languages besides English.
