Byju’s Appoints Arjun Mohan as CEO of its International Business
Edtech leader, Byju’s, has officially named Arjun Mohan as the CEO of its international business. Mohan, former chief of upGrad, will take on the role while Byju Raveendran remains the group CEO and Mrinal Mohit continues to head the India business. This news comes from reliable sources within the company.
Byju’s declined to provide any comments regarding this appointment. Arjun Mohan previously served as Byju’s Chief Business Officer for 11 years before joining upGrad as its India CEO, a position he held until December last year.
Aside from India, Byju’s operates in several countries including the US, Canada, Mexico, Australia, the UK, Brazil, and the Middle East. The company boasts users in over 100 countries, as mentioned on its website.
A Brief Look at Byju’s Expanding Business:
Byju’s has made strategic acquisitions in recent times. It acquired US-based reading platform Epic for a sum of USD 500 million and coding site Tynker for USD 200 million. Other notable acquisitions include Singapore-based Great Learning for approximately USD 600 million and Austria’s mathematics operator GeoGebra for USD 100 million.
This appointment follows the resignation of three board members at Byju’s – GV Ravishankar, MD of early-backer Peak XV Partners (formerly Sequoia Capital India), Russell Dreisenstock of Prosus, and Chan Zuckerberg’s Vivian Wu.
Byju Raveendran addressed the resignation in a recent shareholders’ call, stating that the company has yet to accept the resignations and that the information was prematurely leaked.
In June, Byju’s underwent a restructuring process that resulted in the layoff of about 1,000 employees. The company also faced a legal battle with lenders in the US for a USD 1-billion term loan B. Furthermore, the resignation of the company’s auditor, Deloitte Haskins and Sells, was another setback.
In April, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted searches at three premises of Byju’s in Bengaluru.
