In a recent interview, Rosario Dawson and Dave Filoni, the star and creator of the upcoming Disney+ series “Ahsoka,” discuss the character’s journey and Dawson’s personal journey to the role.
Since Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012, they have been fulfilling the dreams of many Star Wars fans, including notable actors like Ming-Na Wen and Rosario Dawson. In the upcoming Disney+ series “Ahsoka,” Dawson portrays the beloved character Ahsoka Tano, whose origins can be traced back to Dave Filoni’s animated series “The Clone Wars.” Ahsoka, voiced by Ashley Eckstein, has since become a prominent figure in the Star Wars universe, appearing in various animated projects and making her live-action debut in “The Mandalorian” and “The Book of Boba Fett.”
“When I found out I got the role, I was literally doing jumping jacks,” Dawson shared with Entertainment Weekly. “I remember seeing Jon [Favreau] and Dave’s [Filoni] faces, like, ‘Ooh, did we make the right decision? She’s a little bit… hyped fangirl.'” Filoni added, “I was very fortunate. The whole thing came together for me when Rosario put on the costume and became Ahsoka. I just knew it was going to work.”
Ahsoka’s journey began as Anakin Skywalker’s Padawan in “The Clone Wars,” despite her mentor not being a Jedi Master. Together, they experienced numerous adventures alongside Obi-Wan Kenobi. Coincidentally, Dawson was already a fan of the original series and had been depicted as Ahsoka in fanart by BossLogic, catching the attention of Filoni. “It goes back to a quote that Kathleen Kennedy gave me when we were casting for ‘Ahsoka,'” Filoni recalled. “I asked her, ‘How do you know when it’s the right person?’ And she simply replied, ‘Dave, you just know.’ She was right. I just knew Rosario was the right choice, and that’s how Ahsoka came together.”
