Dreaded gangster Sharad Hiraman Mohol was shot dead by a group of men at Pune’s Kothrud on Friday allegedly over a financial dispute.
The 40-year-old Sutardara resident suffered a bullet injury during the attack and was admitted to the Sahyadri hospital in Kothrud. He was pronounced dead at hospital, the police said.
The police have identified the key suspect as Sahil alias Munna Polekar, a resident of Sutardara, and have initiated an investigation to nab him and his aides. “Prima-facie, it is suspected that the attack on Sharad Mohol was the fallout of an internal rivalry within his own gang over a financial dispute,” said Retesh Kumaarr, Pune City Police Commissioner.
Senior police inspector Hemant Patil of Kothrud station said that about three to four men opened fire at Mohol around 1.30 pm. “Police teams have been dispatched in search of the assailants,” he added.
The Kothrud station officials are in the process of lodging a First Information Report (FIR) in the case. Meanwhile, hundreds of supporters of Mohol gathered at Sassoon hospital, where the body was brought for post-mortem.
Mohol, who has 15 serious crimes against him, was charged for murder of suspected Indian Mujahideen member and terror suspect Qateel Siddiqui in June 2012 and was later acquitted in June 2019.
Sharad Mohol was also named as a key accused in the murder of gangster Kishor Marne in January 2010. He and his six aides were convicted and awarded life imprisonment in the murder case lodged at the Dattawadi police station. But Mohol moved the Bombay High Court against the conviction and was later granted bail in 2021.
Kishor Marne was a close aide of Ganesh Marne, who was named as a prime accused in the murder of gangster Sandeep Mohol on the Paud Road on October 4, 2006. After Ganesh was arrested, Kishor started operating the gang.
Sharad Mohol and his wife Swati, a BJP member, were visible in several social activities in the city, officials said.
