Gboard could soon let you use generative AI for proofreading and emojis

Gboard’s newest beta version introduces a range of innovative generative AI capabilities, including proofreading, emoji generation, and tone suggestions. This beta release also enhances stylus support with new gestures and the ability to directly write text into text fields. Gboard, which is my preferred Android keyboard for all my phones, is an exceptional Android app that offers numerous helpful features like multilanguage support and Emoji Kitchen. And now, it’s about to get even better with the addition of generative AI features.

Gboard v13.3 beta, as discovered by 9to5Google and the GappsMod Flags Telegram channel, includes various new functionalities. These additions comprise generative AI features such as proofreading support, emoji generation, and other modifications. The beta version includes several new stylus gestures as well. These features are currently available for testing in the beta version and are concealed behind experimental flags. However, they may potentially be released in the stable channel in the future.

The upcoming Proofread with Gboard feature utilizes generative AI to assist users in identifying errors in their writing. While Gboard already has spelling checks and autocorrect features, the Proofread with Gboard takes it a step further by leveraging generative AI. Through demos, it is evident that it provides a sequence of corrections throughout the entire typed message, rectifying spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors. The proofread feature is currently only available in US English.

Furthermore, Google seems to be utilizing generative AI to allow users to create emoji-style stickers. Users have the ability to describe the sticker they desire, and AI will attempt to generate a sticker based on that prompt. This feature, known as Emogen, is currently available in US English. Unlike Gboard’s existing Emoji Kitchen feature, which combines existing emojis, Emogen takes it to the next level by creating emoji stickers from descriptive text prompts. This allows users to create unique stickers that suit their preferences.

Another possible application of generative AI on Gboard is the integration of a “tone” feature, similar to Gmail’s “Help me write” functionality. Users can input their initial text and Gboard will suggest changes to adjust the tone, making it more formal or informal based on the desired outcome.

In addition, Gboard is improving its virtual keyboard to cater to users of large-screen devices with stylus support. The beta version introduces a new “stylus handwriting” feature alongside several stylus gestures. While Gboard already offers a handwriting mode that converts handwriting into text, the “Write in text fields” option in the beta version enhances this capability by allowing users to directly write in any text field, simplifying the user experience when using a stylus.

Some of the new stylus gestures in the beta version include the ability to scratch out text to delete it, insert new text by drawing a caret or arrow, join separate words by drawing vertical lines, move text to a new line with a downward and left motion, and select text by drawing a circle around it. These features are showcased in a demo, highlighting their practicality and usefulness.

Overall, these new features are groundbreaking and make AI more accessible for everyday conversations. Hopefully, they will be incorporated into the stable release of Gboard in the near future.
