Gender Pay Gap: CJI DY Chandrachud raises concern over gender pay gap | India News

BENGALURU: Indian women, especially those belonging to marginalised communities, face disparities in remuneration compared to their male counterparts despite making significant contributions to various spheres of work, CJI DY Chandrachud said here on Sunday.
The CJI delivered the inaugural Justice ES Venkataramaiah Centennial Memorial Lecture organised by the National Law School of India University (NLSIU).The CJI is the Chancellor of the law school.
Describing the gender pay gap as “a persistent challenge” before society, the CJI said it reflects a complex interplay of factors, including societal norms, cultural expectations and systemic unconscious biases. “The pay gap widens as it intersects with other forms of discrimination, amplifying challenges for women who navigate both gender and racial biases,” he said, calling for bridging the gender pay gap through policies.
The CJI expressed concern over disability becoming a barrier and denying individuals access to public opportunities due to societal biases perceiving disability as a limitation. He lauded the judiciary in Karnataka for being the biggest employer of people with disabilities among various state judiciaries in the country.
Referring to Supreme Court verdicts upholding the rights of the disabled, he said, “The court emphasised the importance of dignity and equality, and the state’s positive obligation to fulfil the rights of the persons with disabilities.”
The CJI said the apex court’s report auditing its accessibility for the disabled provides valuable insights into the challenges in physical accessibility like lack of wheelchair-friendly amenities to functional challenges like lack of interpreters. “We are currently on the path to adopting the suggestions given by the report,” he said.
The event was presided over by Justice BV Nagarathna, daughter of justice Venkataramaiah and also a judge of the Supreme Court, who is in line to become the country’s first woman Chief Justice. Justice Venkataramaiah was a former CJI.
NLSIU vice-chancellor Sudhir Krishnaswamy and registrar NS Nigam were also present at the event held at Jnana Jyothi Auditorium on Palace Road, which saw a huge turnout, mainly students from the law school and members of the judicial fraternity from Karnataka and other parts of the country.
