Houston is set to unveil an impressive public art installation, known as “the world’s largest sundial,” that not only serves as a time measuring device but also generates solar power for the local community.
Designed by Berlin-based artist and architect Riccardo Mariano, the Arco del Tiempo (Arch of Time) will be erected in Houston’s East End district in 2024.
Towering at a height of 100 feet, this remarkable structure doubles as a light display and a solar installation capable of producing 400,000 kWh of power annually. The sculpture has been ingeniously designed to direct sunlight onto the surface of Houston’s Guadalupe Plaza Park, creating dynamic patterns of light that change with the movement of the sun.
In addition to its artistic and timekeeping functions, the sculpture also incorporates solar panels on its south-facing exterior. These panels will generate power equivalent to the needs of 40 local homes and offset more than 100% of the energy demand of the nearby Talento Bilingüe de Houston, a prominent Latino cultural center in the East End.
The project was brought to life with the assistance of Land Art Generator, a non-profit organization dedicated to addressing climate change through the creation of functional and artistic structures. They envision the Arco del Tiempo as a net-positive contributor to the environment, going beyond its break-even point and making a positive impact on the climate and planet.
Riccardo Mariano describes his creation as “a practical example to illustrate the movement of the earth around the sun in a playful way.” Moreover, the space within the arch will be utilized for public events during nighttime.
Mayor Sylvester Turner recognizes the significance of this unique artwork, stating, “It is a renewable energy power plant. It is a monument to a new era of energy.” He highlights Houston’s reputation as a leader in energy innovation and the transition towards sustainable energy sources, solidifying the city’s position as an art hub and global frontrunner in the energy sector.
