God of War TV Series Officially Ordered at Amazon Prime Video

The highly anticipated live-action adaptation of the God of War series has officially been greenlit by Prime Video. Reports of the series first surfaced in March, with Amazon expressing interest in acquiring the rights to create a television adaptation based on the critically acclaimed franchise. Rafe Judkins, known for his work on The Wheel of Time and the Uncharted movie, will serve as the showrunner for the upcoming series. Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, the creators of The Expanse, will executive produce and write God of War for Amazon. While it was previously unclear which mythology the series would explore—the ancient Greek or the newer Norse mythology—it has now been revealed that the project will follow the story beats of the award-winning 2018 reboot, featuring the iconic bearded Kratos.

“God of War is a captivating and character-driven franchise that we believe will enthral our global audience with its immersive and expansive worlds, as well as its rich storytelling,” said Vernon Sanders, the head of global television at Amazon Studios, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “We are honored to embark on this monumental adventure of exploring the God of War mythology alongside Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, and Santa Monica Studio.”

The critically acclaimed 2018 game introduces Kratos, the God of War, who has exiled himself from his violent past after years of gruelling battles against the Gods of Olympus in ancient Greece. Now residing in the Norse realm of Midgard, Kratos mourns the loss of his beloved wife and embarks on a perilous journey to scatter her ashes from the highest peak in the nine realms. Accompanying him on this quest is his estranged son Atreus, who must navigate the unforgiving and treacherous world, battling gods and monsters while forging a deep bond with his father.

“God of War is one of PlayStation’s most critically acclaimed video games, so we are thrilled to partner with Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios to bring our beloved franchise to both loyal fans and new audiences in a bold and authentic way,” commented Asad Qizilbash, the head of PlayStation Productions.

God of War joins a growing list of first-party PlayStation titles that are being adapted for live-action, including the highly anticipated Horizon Zero Dawn series, developed by The Umbrella Academy creator Steve Blackman, as well as the upcoming The Last of Us series, set to premiere on Disney+ Hotstar in India on January 16.

The adaptation of video games into live-action formats has often been a subject of controversy, with recent examples like the Tom Holland-led Uncharted film receiving negative reviews. While the movie achieved significant box office success, grossing $401.7 million worldwide, it fell short in capturing the action set pieces and made questionable narrative choices that deviated from the essence of the original characters. Notable exceptions to this trend include Netflix’s Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and Arcane, both of which utilized the game universes as a foundation for unique and independent storytelling.

Additionally, the sequel to the 2018 God of War game, titled God of War Ragnarök, garnered six awards at The Game Awards 2022, including Best Performance, which was collected by Christopher Judge. With the announcement of the TV series, fans are eagerly speculating about potential casting choices, even prompting Cory Barlog, the director of the first game, to jokingly suggest Chris Pratt for the role of Kratos. Notably, Pratt is set to voice Mario in the forthcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie for Universal Pictures.

PlayStation Productions has an exciting lineup in store, starting with the Gran Turismo movie led by David Harbour (known for his role in Stranger Things), which is set to release in August of next year. Furthermore, movie adaptations of the zombie-survival game Days Gone and the science-fiction adventure Gravity Rush, featuring a character with gravity-defying abilities, are also in development.

As of now, no release window has been announced for the God of War series on Amazon Prime Video.
