Google Implements Anti-Stalking Measures for AirTag and Similar Bluetooth Trackers

Google is implementing new measures to combat stalking. The company’s unknown tracker alerts and other safety features, which were announced at Google I/O in May, are now starting to appear on Android 6.0+ devices. This initiative aims to address the increase in digital stalking following Apple’s AirTag launch in 2021.

Android’s unknown tracker alerts inform you if an unidentified Bluetooth tracker is in your vicinity without its owner. If your Android phone notifies you about a tracked accessory, you can tap the alert to gather more information. This includes a map showing where the tracker has been with you and, in some cases, details like the serial number and owner’s information. Additionally, you can choose the “Play sound” option to make the accessory emit a sound, aiding in its location. If the tracker seems suspicious, instructions will be provided on how to deactivate it, preventing its owner from receiving any further updates. For example, in the case of an AirTag, twisting off the top and removing the battery will render it inactive.

The Android rollout also allows for manual scanning of nearby trackers instead of relying solely on alerts. Once your phone receives the update, go to Settings > Safety & Emergency > Unknown Tracker Alerts and select “Scan now.” According to Google, the manual search should take approximately ten seconds, and if a tracker is detected, you will have the same options as with an automatic alert.

This new feature is the result of Google and Apple joining forces to address concerns about unwanted tracker stalking. It is worth noting that Google’s anti-stalking measures may impact the ability to track stolen items on a map, as determined thieves will be able to locate hidden trackers quickly, regardless of the phone used. However, the priority for both Google and Apple is to reduce stalking incidents, so this compromise is deemed necessary in terms of security.
