TL;DR

  • Google has reportedly abandoned plans for an AI chatbot app targeting Gen Z users.
  • The app, called Bubble Characters, would have involved characters engaging in conversations with users.
  • Some team members were redirected to work on Bard instead of Bubble Characters.

Google launched its Bard chatbot earlier this year, following the footsteps of ChatGPT and Bing Chat. However, it appears that the company has quietly scrapped its plans for an unconventional chatbot.

CNBC reports that Google abandoned its AI-powered chatbot app designed for Gen Z users, based on internal documents it obtained.

The app, named Bubble Characters, allowed users to choose a character for conversational interactions. It is believed that development on the app started in Q4 2021 but has now been deprioritized. Several team members were instructed to pause their work on Bubble Characters to focus on Bard’s launch preparations.

Do you think Google made the right decision to abandon this app?

“What started out as something from a science fiction novel, became the next generation of human-level conversation,” according to CNBC‘s description of the app. The description suggests that the app offers engaging conversations tailored to Gen Z. It remains unclear whether this refers to the topics discussed or the style of speech. Nevertheless, the report indicates that the chatbot had the ability to ask follow-up questions and provide relationship advice.

It’s intriguing to learn that Google explored a lighthearted approach to AI chatbots, even if specifically targeting Gen Z feels cringe-worthy. However
