Finding the right kind of music is no longer a task, thanks to the plethora of streaming platforms, however, finding a song that got stuck in your head but cannot put a finger on is still quite a task. Google has now come up with a neat solution, allowing users to discover the song by humming to their Android smartphone.

The feature is called “play, sing or hum a song,” and it is similar to Apple’s Shazam but better as one doesn’t need to know the lyrics or the actual song playing to identify it. Currently available for Android smartphone users via the YouTube Music app, the latest feature is aimed at helping users find a song in an instant.

Out of the five songs I searched for (a mix of English, Hindi, and Kannada), YouTube Music correctly identified four. This feature is particularly helpful for people trying to remember a song they heard some time ago, especially when they can only recall how it sounds, rather than the name or the lyrics.

In addition to humming, you can play or sing a song, and the probability of identifying the correct song increases significantly. A similar feature has been available on Google Assistant for a while, but by natively integrating it into the music app, users now have a one-stop solution to identify and play songs within a single app.

How to use play, sing or hum to find a song on YouTube Music?

To find a song on YouTube Music by humming or singing, open the YouTube app on your Android phone, click on the search icon (magnifier lens icon) on the top right icon, and select the icon that looks like a music wave, and start humming on singing.

Depending on the specific case, the app might require around five to ten seconds of humming or audio samples to identify the song. Once identified, the same song can be directly played on the YouTube Music app.
