Greta Gerwig’s Barbie Smashes Box Office Records with $155 Million US Debut

Ticket sales for the highly anticipated “Barbenheimer” movie soared as devoted fans of Barbie and biopics flocked to theaters this past weekend. Greta Gerwig’s groundbreaking film, “Barbie,” shattered numerous records, including a historic opening weekend in the US with a staggering $155 million in domestic revenue. This achievement marks the highest-grossing opening for a film directed by a woman, surpassing the previous record set by Anna Boden’s “Captain Marvel” at $153 million.

Jeff Goldstein, President of Domestic Distribution at Warner Bros. Pictures, expressed his excitement and pride in a statement, stating, “The overwhelming response to ‘Barbie’ confirms what we’ve always believed: this film is truly extraordinary and the must-see cinematic event of the summer, if not the year. We are thrilled to be a part of it and extend our congratulations to everyone involved in creating this magnificent labor of love.”

The “Barbenheimer” combo is the highest-grossing opening weekend for a non-Disney movie

In addition, “Barbie” surpasses “The Super Mario Bros Movie” as the highest-grossing domestic opening of 2023, earning a combined worldwide box-office revenue of $337 million. It’s worth noting that this weekend also saw the successful release of Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” which exceeded industry predictions with a global earning of $174.2 million, including $80.5 million from domestic sales. According to AVClub, the combined success of “Barbenheimer” contributed to it being the fourth-highest-grossing box office weekend in US history, and the largest not driven by Disney franchises like “Star Wars” or “Marvel.”

Similarly, “Oppenheimer” achieved remarkable milestones. According to Deadline, the R-rated historical drama set new records for a biopic, surpassing the global opening day and weekend earnings of “Bohemian Rhapsody” ($124 million). It is also Christopher Nolan’s third-highest-grossing opening weekend, both domestically and globally, and his most successful non-superhero film to date, only behind “The Dark Knight Rises” ($161 million domestic) and “The Dark Knight” ($158 million).

These astounding figures confirm the immense anticipation surrounding “Barbenheimer.” What began as a lighthearted joke about two movies with contrasting tones sharing an opening weekend blossomed into an internet sensation. According to the National Association of Theater Owners, approximately 200,000 moviegoers in the US purchased tickets to watch both “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” on the same day. Rather than turning it into a battle of the sexes, viewers chose to support both films, showcasing their appreciation for diverse cinema beyond the realm of superhero franchises and sequels.
