Gunbrella impresses with its water-resistance, according to Destructoid

The Emotional Journey of Gunbrella:

Prepare to be transported to a different time as we delve into the world of Gunbrella, the latest offering from Doinksoft. If you remember their previous game, Gato Roboto, then you’re in for a treat. As a seasoned reviewer, I had the honor of being one of the first to experience this adventure. Let’s immerse ourselves in the story of Gunbrella and discover its evolution from Doinksoft’s earlier works.

I’ll admit, I wasn’t completely enamored with Gato Roboto. While it had its merits, it lacked the substance to truly captivate me. In my review, I compared it to the likes of Cave Story and Iconoclasts, questioning its recommendation when such stellar games already exist. But it seems Doinksoft took my words to heart (if they even read them), as Gunbrella is an impressive step up, taking inspiration from Cave Story and adding its own unique touch.

The Tale of Gunbrella:

Gunbrella revolves around its titular protagonist, a woodsman seeking vengeance for his wife’s murder, committed by the very weapon he now wields. To make matters worse, his child has also been kidnapped. It’s an opening that leaves room for interpretation and personal investment.

But here’s the interesting twist: the gun itself doubles as an umbrella. A truly new concept, it not only shields you from the rain but also acts as a bullet blocker, provides propulsion, and enables gentle descents. The gunbrella becomes the core of the game’s movement system, offering versatility and ease of navigation right from the start.

An Unconventional Adventure:

The preview I was fortunate enough to experience provided a substantial chunk of the game, giving me a glimpse into Doinksoft’s vision.

While Gunbrella falls under the category of a gated exploration game, where you gradually uncover interconnected areas to progress, it doesn’t quite fit the traditional metroidvania mold. Unlike other games that rely on acquiring new skills and items to advance, Gunbrella leans more heavily on quests to drive the narrative, reminiscent of Cave Story’s structure.

Another resemblance lies in the game’s humor, which adds a whimsical layer to an overall melancholic atmosphere. It’s this blend of hardship and lightheartedness that gives Gunbrella a distinctly human feel, making it stand out from the crowd.

Form Meets Function:

Regrettably, Gunbrella falls slightly short when it comes to boss design. While visually appealing, the battles lack the satisfying impact one would expect. The short range of the Gunbrella becomes a hindrance, making it feel less impactful in these encounters. Although there’s nothing inherently wrong with them, they pale in comparison to the game’s overall strengths.

The story also treads familiar territory, presenting a mixed bag of captivating characters and enjoyable dialogue mixed with cliched elements. However, these unoriginal plot points do provide an opportunity for the world-building and characters to shine. It’s possible that a major twist could await players beyond the preview, offering a redemption arc for the story. Personally, I tire of game wives serving only as catalysts for male vengeance.

The Perfect Forecast:

Overall, I must say I’m impressed with what Gunbrella has to offer. Its movement system is a standout feature, serving as the backbone for a well-paced narrative and immersive world-building. Even if the story and gameplay remain relatively unchanged, Gunbrella manages to retain its allure and avoid monotony.

Nevertheless, I firmly believe that Gunbrella still has some surprises up its sleeve. Though the preview was substantial, I’m confident that the best is yet to come. I eagerly anticipate the full release later this year, eager to once again wield this powerful fashion accessory.
