History, Significance and Ways to Celebrate

Every year on July 29th, the world observes International Tiger Day, which serves as an appeal for action to stop the devastating trend and protect tigers. The tigers have been the top predators in their ecosystem and now they are in danger of going extinct.

There are many factors that contribute to the habitat loss of tigers:

  • Habitat Loss: The continuous destruction of tigers’ natural habitat is the biggest threat to them. Agriculture, logging, and infrastructure development have all contributed to deforestation, which has divided tiger ranges.
  • Poaching: The rich market for traditional medicine and decorative objects fuels the illegal killing of tigers for their components, which is still a constant menace.
  • Conflict between Humans and Wildlife: Conflicts between humans and large cats have become more frequent as human populations grow and invade tiger habitats. Tiger populations may be further endangered by reactive kills resulting from attacks on humans and livestock.

What is the History of International Tiger Day?

International Tiger Day was created at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit on July 29, 2010. This international conference was called in response to the alarming fall in tiger populations.

This particular day was selected to highlight the significance of tiger conservation and to inspire international action to save these amazing animals.

There were an estimated 3,200 wild tigers left at the peak, after an astounding 97% of them became extinct over the previous century. This harsh reality made it clear that coordinated action was desperately needed.

The National Today mentions: “International Tiger Day was first celebrated in 2010 after it was found that 97% of all wild tigers had disappeared in the last century, with about only 3,000 of them remaining. It’s not news that tigers are on the brink of extinction and International World Tiger Day aims to halt the numbers from worsening. Habitat loss, climate change, hunting, and poaching are only some of the factors that are responsible for the decline in the tiger population.

Along with the preservation of these species, the day also aims to protect and expand their habitats. Many international organizations such as the WWF, the IFAW, and the Smithsonian Institute also observe International Tiger Day,” it adds.
