Hogwarts Legacy Shatters Single-Player Twitch Record with a Whopping 1.28 Million Viewers

Hogwarts Legacy has taken the Twitch charts by storm, breaking records with its staggering numbers. In a tweet, developer Avalanche Software confirmed that their highly anticipated open-world Harry Potter RPG reached a peak concurrent viewership of 1.28 million on the live-streaming platform. This achievement comes amidst some controversy, as certain individuals chose to boycott the game due to its association with J.K. Rowling, the original author. Despite the drama, Hogwarts Legacy now holds the top spot as the most popular single-player game on Twitch during its launch period, surpassing the records set by Cyberpunk 2077 and Elden Ring, the 2022 Game of the Year winner.

Currently, Hogwarts Legacy is exclusively available to those who pre-ordered the Deluxe Edition, granting them 72-hour early access. The global launch is scheduled for later tonight. The impressive numbers, coupled with the game being highly wished for on Steam, are a testament to the tremendous hype and anticipation that Hogwarts Legacy has generated since its initial leaked gameplay footage in 2018. According to Gamesight, a performance metrics website cited by Kotaku, the multiplayer FPS title Valorant currently holds the first position on Twitch with a peak viewership of 1.7 million during its launch period. This was partly fueled by an early access campaign by Riot Games, where viewers could gain access to the game by watching participating streamers.

Early Impressions of Hogwarts Legacy: A Worthy Return to the Wizarding World

While Hogwarts Legacy ranks third on the Twitch charts, it garners the most attention for a single-player game launch. Despite technical and performance issues that plagued it at launch, Cyberpunk 2077 follows closely behind with a peak concurrent viewership of 1.14 million. Earlier this week, Félix “xQc” Lengyel, one of Twitch’s top streamers, streamed Hogwarts Legacy to over 108,000 live viewers.

As per SteamDB, a data tracking site, Hogwarts Legacy amassed an impressive 489,139 concurrent players, making it one of the biggest early access launches on the platform. Games analyst Benji-Sales tweeted that this figure represents the second-highest player peak in history for a paid, single-player-only game. With these numbers, Hogwarts Legacy surpasses the peak player count of 2015’s Fallout 4 (472,962) and comes second only to Cyberpunk 2077, which broke the 1 million mark. It’s worth noting that Elden Ring technically holds the second place, but its multiplayer PvP and summoning elements remove it from the single-player game category. Elden Ring, the Game of the Year winner, achieved an all-time peak of 953,426 concurrent players.

Despite its popularity, some streamers on Twitch have faced challenges when broadcasting Hogwarts Legacy. Controversial comments made by Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling against the transgender community have sparked backlash from the LGBTQ+ community, some of which spilled over into the game’s launch. Although the developer has stated on its FAQ page that Rowling was not involved in the creation of the game, some fans are boycotting it to protest the fact that the author still receives royalties from the enchanting universe she created. A vocal minority within the group has taken to Twitch to berate streamers who choose to play Hogwarts Legacy. In fact, web developer Sam Gibbs created a watchdog website (now offline) that monitored whether a particular Twitch streamer played “THAT wizard game.”

Hogwarts Legacy will officially launch tonight at 12am IST (midnight) on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X. The PS4 and Xbox One versions will be released on April 4, while the Nintendo Switch version is set to drop on July 25.
