Hollywood Strikes Cause Delay of 2023 Emmy Awards Beyond September Date

The Primetime Emmy Awards are facing potential postponement due to ongoing dual strikes by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA in the United States. According to a report from Variety, vendors have been informed that the awards will no longer take place on September 18 as originally planned.

The Television Academy and cable network Fox, which is set to broadcast the 75th edition of the award ceremony honoring the best talent from television and streaming platforms, have not yet made an official announcement regarding these changes.

This marks the first time in two decades that the Emmys have been rescheduled. In 2001, the ceremony was delayed by two months following the September 11 terror attacks.

In 2020, the awards were held in a hybrid format due to the coronavirus pandemic. Jimmy Kimmel hosted the ceremony from LA’s Staples Center, while all the nominees attended from their homes and other locations.

Approximately 65,000 actors, the majority of whom earn less than $27,000 (about Rs. 22 lakh) per year from their screen work, along with 11,500 screenwriters, are participating in the strikes called by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Radio and Television Artists (SAG-AFTRA).

This joint strike, the first since 1960, was initiated after the WGA and SAG-AFTRA failed to reach an agreement for a new contract with the studios and streaming services represented by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).

The WGA members began their strike in early May, demanding improved wages, higher minimum pay, more writers per show, and shorter exclusive contracts, among other things. The members of SAG-AFTRA joined them earlier this month.
